Bezerra is a Portuguese surname of Hebrew ancestry, popular among the Sephardi Jewish settlers in Northern Portugal. The name translates to 'heifer'. The first members of this family have origins in Ponte de Lima, the oldest Portuguese village, and can be traced back to the century XII. By the early 1500s, Jews in Portugal were told that they had either to convert to Catholicism or leave the country, and while many converted by choice and embraced their new faith, others were faced with forced conversions, which led to false adherence to Catholicism in public with continued observance of Judaism in private (also known as Crypto-Jews, or "Jews without a past"). These converted Jews were commonly called ' New Christians', ' Marranos' or ' Conversos'. The Bezerra family name has been historically recognized as a 'converso' lineage of ethnic Jews converted to the Catholic Church. José Bezerra Da Silva
José Bezerra da Silva (February 23, 1927 in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil – January 17, 2005 in Rio de Janeiro) was a Brazilian samba musician of the partido alto style. Biography Bezerra da Silva played zabumba as a child and sang coco in Recife. He moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1942, and in 1950, ''Rádio Clube do Brasil'' hired him as a session musician. In 1960 he became a member of the ''Orquestra Copacabana Discos'' of Sao Paulo, and in the 1970s and 1980s he performed with the ''Orquestra da TV Globo''. He recorded his first singles in 1969, and went on to release 30 albums over the course of his career, charting many hits in his native country. His music often deals with political and social issues, touching on gang violence, the drug trade, and the law. José Paulo Bezerra Maciel Júnior (born 25 July 1988), known as Paulinho, is a Brazilian professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Sport Club Corinthians Paulista. He is also a former Brazil international, making 56 caps between 2011 and 2018. Club career Early career Paulinho began his playing career with Pão de Açúcar, joining the youth squad in 2004. Juan Bautista de Anza Bezerra Nieto (July 6 or 7, 1736 – December 19, 1788) was an expeditionary leader, military officer, and politician primarily in California and New Mexico under the Spanish Empire. He is credited as one of the founding fathers of Spanish California and served as an official within New Spain as Governor of the Province of New Mexico.
