''Beyond Description (1973–1989)'' is the second twelve- CD box set retrospective of the Grateful Dead's studio and live albums. A companion to '' The Golden Road (1965–1973)'' box set, it covers their time on the Grateful Dead Records and Arista Records labels, from 1973 to 1989. The set contains expanded and remastered versions of all the albums during the brief period with their own label (except '' Steal Your Face''), and during their time on Arista (except '' Without a Net'' and later box set '' So Many Roads''). Included are numerous previously unreleased studio outtakes and live tracks. Grateful Dead
The Grateful Dead was an American rock music, rock band formed in Palo Alto, California, in 1965. Known for their eclectic style that fused elements of rock, blues, jazz, Folk music, folk, country music, country, bluegrass music, bluegrass, rock and roll, gospel music, gospel, reggae, and world music with psychedelic music, psychedelia, the band is famous for Musical improvisation, improvisation during their Concert, live performances, and for their devoted fan base, known as "Deadhead, Deadheads". According to the musician and writer Lenny Kaye, the music of the Grateful Dead "touches on ground that most other groups don't even know exists." So Many Roads (1965–1995)
''So Many Roads (1965–1995)'' is a five-disc box set by the Grateful Dead. Primarily consisting of concert recordings from different periods of the band's history, it also contains several songs recorded in the studio. All but one of the forty-two tracks (forty-seven songs; duration: 6 hours, 26 minutes) were previously unreleased. The album was released on November 7, 1999. It was certified a gold record by the RIAA on April 12, 2000. The title of the album comes from the Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter song of the same name; the version included is from the group's final concert. A single disc sampler called ''So Many Roads (1965–1995) Sampler'' was released to various media outlets. Jerry Garcia
Jerome John Garcia (August 1, 1942 – August 9, 1995) was an American musician who was the lead guitarist and a vocalist with the rock band Grateful Dead, which he co-founded and which came to prominence during the counterculture of the 1960s. Although he disavowed the role, Garcia was viewed by many as the leader of the band. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 as a member of the Grateful Dead. As one of its founders, Garcia performed with the Grateful Dead for the band's entire 30-year career (1965–1995). Robert Hunter (lyricist)
Robert C. Christie Hunter (born Robert Burns; June 23, 1941 – September 23, 2019) was an American lyricist, singer-songwriter, translator and poet, best known for his work with the Grateful Dead. Born near San Luis Obispo, California, Hunter spent some time during his childhood in foster homes as a result of his father abandoning his family, and took refuge in reading and writing. He attended the University of Connecticut for a year before returning to Palo Alto, California, Palo Alto, where he became friends with musician Jerry Garcia. Hunter and Garcia began a collaboration that lasted through the remainder of Garcia's life. Garcia and others formed the Grateful Dead in 1965, and later began working with lyrics from Hunter, whom Garcia invited to join the band as a lyricist. Hunter contributed substantially to many of their albums, beginning with ''Aoxomoxoa'' in 1969. Dead Set (album)
''Dead Set'' is the seventh live album (eighteenth overall) by the Grateful Dead. It was released in August 1981 on Arista. The album contains live material recorded between September and October 1980 at the Warfield Theatre in San Francisco and Radio City Music Hall in New York. Original CD pressings omitted the track "Space" so the entire album could fit on one CD. However, "Space" was included when the album was rereleased as part of the 2004 '' Beyond Description'' box set, as well as on one CD in 2006. The 2006 release also included a bonus CD of live material. ''Dead Set'' is essentially a companion release to ''Reckoning'', a 1981 release of songs featuring acoustic instruments: both of the albums were recorded at the same runs of concerts. ''Reckoning'' is a 1981 live double album by the Grateful Dead. It is the band's sixth live album and seventeenth album overall. It consists of acoustic material recorded live in September and October 1980. Some of the tracks are shortened versions of the live performances. The material recorded in 1980 was originally intended for release on one double LP set, but the format of the music subsequently steered the Grateful Dead towards the release of two double albums, ''Reckoning'' and ''Dead Set''. Built To Last
''Built to Last'' is the thirteenth and final studio album by the Grateful Dead (their twentieth album overall). It was recorded between February 1 and October 20, 1989, and originally released on October 31, 1989. The album was released on CD in 1989 by Arista Records before being rereleased in 2000 by BMG International. It was then remastered, expanded, and released as part of the '' Beyond Description (1973–1989)'' 12-CD box set in October 2004. The remastered version was later released separately on CD on April 11, 2006, by Rhino Records. This album features the most songs by keyboard player Brent Mydland, who has four song credits, all of which are in collaboration with Dead lyricist John Perry Barlow. This mirrored accurately Mydland's increasing vocal presence in the band over the decade he spent with the Dead. ''In the Dark'' is the twelfth studio album (nineteenth overall) by the Grateful Dead. It was recorded in January 1987, and released on July 6, 1987. ''In the Dark'' was the band's first album in six years, and its first studio album since 1980's '' Go to Heaven''. It became unexpectedly popular, achieving double platinum certification in the U.S. It reached No. 6 on the ''Billboard'' 200 chart, the Grateful Dead's only top ten album. "Touch of Grey" peaked at No. 9 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100, the band's only top forty single; it also became a frequently played music video on MTV. ''Go to Heaven'' is the eleventh studio album (sixteenth overall) by rock band the Grateful Dead, released April 28, 1980, by Arista Records. It is the band's first album with keyboardist Brent Mydland. ''Go to Heaven'' was both the third Grateful Dead studio album in a row to use an outside producer, this time Gary Lyons, and the last studio album for over seven years. Recording Keyboardist Keith Godchaux and vocalist Donna Godchaux left the Grateful Dead in February 1979 and were replaced in both positions by Brent Mydland. While in the band Silver, Mydland had performed on the hit pop song "Wham Bam Shang-a-Lang", also playing and writing tracks for that band's 1976 country rock album. Shakedown Street
''Shakedown Street'' is the tenth studio album (fifteenth overall) by rock band the Grateful Dead, released November 8, 1978, on Arista Records. The album came just over a year after previous studio album '' Terrapin Station''. It was the final album for Keith and Donna Jean Godchaux, who left the band a few months after its release. The record was produced by Lowell George (of Little Feat) and John Kahn. Recording Toward the end of the Grateful Dead's 1974–1976 hiatus, they rented a Front Street warehouse in San Rafael. In 1977, when lead guitarist Jerry Garcia was rehearsing with the Jerry Garcia Band for the recording of ''Cats Under the Stars'', they decided to capture the sound of the room, installing studio recording equipment. ''Terrapin Station'' is the ninth studio album (and fourteenth overall) by American rock band the Grateful Dead, released July 27, 1977. It was the first Grateful Dead album on Arista Records and the first studio album after the band returned to live touring.
