Bettws, Newport
Bettws ( cy, Betws) is a large modern housing estate, electoral ward and coterminous community (parish) of the city of Newport, South Wales. Etymology The name of the village comes from the Middle English word ''bedhus'', meaning "prayer house", which became ''betws'' in Welsh. Infrastructure The housing estate was built in the 1960s, and the large majority of houses are identical in plan and design. The roads in the estate are all named after rivers. 51.8% of housing is privately owned, and 42.6% is rented from either the Newport City Council or local housing associations, such as Charter Housing. In 2009 Newport City Council transferred ownership of their social housing and most of the land they owned in the area to Newport City Homes, a housing association. The estate was built around the 17th-century parish church of St David in Bettws, which is the likely origin of the name 'Bettws', a place of prayer or private chapel. Newport Rising
The Newport Rising was the last large-scale armed rising in Wales, by Chartists whose demands included democracy and the right to vote with a secret ballot. On Monday 4 November 1839, approximately 4,000 Chartist sympathisers, under the leadership of John Frost, marched on the town of Newport, Monmouthshire. En route, some Newport chartists were arrested by police and held prisoner at the Westgate Hotel in central Newport. Chartists from industrial towns outside of Newport, including many coal-miners, some with home-made arms, were intent on liberating their fellow Chartists. Fighting began, and soldiers of the 45th Regiment of Foot, deployed in the protection of the police, were ordered to open fire. Bettws High School
Newport High School ( cy, Ysgol Uwchradd Casnewydd) is a co-educational secondary school in the Bettws district of the city of Newport, South Wales, UK for pupils aged 11–18 years. Admissions There are about 1,100 pupils from a catchment area to the north western side of Newport. History The school's origin can be dated back to the foundation in 1896 of separate Boys' and Girls' intermediate schools in Newport. Subsequently the High School name was adopted. Following the implementation of comprehensive education the school(s) eventually moved from Queen's Hill to Bettws Lane. The current school of 2009 was built in front of the old Bettws Comprehensive School, itself built in 1970. The latter's school plot was sold to Barratt Homes for demolition and house building. Allt-yr-yn ( cy, Allt-yr-ynn) is a suburb of the city of Newport, south-east Wales. Name Pronounced by English-speaking locals as "Olt-er-reen", the spelling should include two Ns at the end, as "Allt-yr-ynn". The name means "The slope (''allt'') of the ash trees (''ynn'' which is the plural of ''onnen'' – ash tree)" in Welsh. M4 Motorway
The M4, originally the London-South Wales Motorway, is a motorway in the United Kingdom running from west London to southwest Wales.
