Better Than That (campaign)
Better Than That is a UK anti-hate crime campaign created in response to the significant rise in hate crimes following the 2016 United Kingdom European Union membership referendum. It launched on 1 December 2016. The campaign is supported by UK Prime Minister Theresa May and a cross-party group of politicians. Launch The launch meeting on 1 December 2016 was attended by a number of parliamentarians including members of the Conservative Party (Baroness Warsi, Eric Pickles), the Labour Party (Rosena Allin-Khan) and the Liberal Democrats (Tom Brake). 2016 United Kingdom European Union Membership Referendum
The United Kingdom European Union membership referendum, commonly referred to as the EU referendum or the Brexit referendum, took place on 23 June 2016 in the United Kingdom (UK) and Gibraltar to ask the electorate whether the country should remain a member of, or leave, the European Union (EU). It was organised and facilitated through the European Union Referendum Act 2015 and the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000. The referendum resulted in 51.9% of the votes cast being in favour of leaving the EU. Although the referendum was legally non-binding, the government of the time promised to implement the result. Sayeeda Hussain Warsi, Baroness Warsi, (; born 28 March 1971) is a British lawyer, politician, and member of the House of Lords who served as Chairman of the Conservative Party, co-Chairwoman of the Conservative Party from 2010 to 2012. Rosena Chantelle Allin-Khan (born 10 May 1978) is a British doctor and politician serving as Shadow Cabinet Minister for Mental Health since 2020. A member of the Labour Party, she has been Member of Parliament (MP) for Tooting since the 2016 Tooting by-election. She stood as a candidate at the 2020 Labour Party deputy leadership election, finishing in second-place after three rounds of voting. Thomas Anthony Brake (born 6 May 1962) is a British Liberal Democrat politician. He was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Carshalton and Wallington in London from 1997 to 2019. He was appointed Director of the cross party pressure group Unlock Democracy in October 2020. Early life Brake was born in Melton Mowbray and moved to France when he was eight. British Future is a UK-based think tank and registered charity whose stated aim is to advance the education of the public in the subjects of equality and diversity, human rights, racial and cultural harmony, citizenship and social inclusion. History Incorporated in June 2011, it was initially called The Communications Organisation and was renamed British Future in December 2011. It became a charity in 2014, having been previously run as a not-for-profit organisation. Its director is Sunder Katwala, a former director of the Fabian Society. The Community Security Trust (CST) is a British charity whose purpose is to provide safety, security, and advice to the Jewish community in the UK. It provides advice, training, representation and research. Founding and mission The Community Security Trust grew out of the Community Security Organisation, which became independent of the Board of Deputies of British Jews in 1986. The Jewish Leadership Council (previously known as the Jewish Community Leadership Council) is an organisation in the United Kingdom, founded in 2003, whose declared aim is to forward the interests of the organised Jewish community in Britain. The council was founded by its first chairman, then president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, Henry Grunwald, and a numberof other senior UK Jewish leaders. Kick It Out (organisation)
Kick It Out was established as a campaign with the brand name 'Let's Kick Racism Out of Football' in 1993 and as an organisation in 1997. The organisation works within the football, educational and community sectors to challenge discrimination, encourage inclusive practices and work for positive change. The Polish Social and Cultural Association ( pl, Polski Ośrodek Społeczno-Kulturalny; POSK) is a Polish cultural centre in west London, England. It was funded by public subscription and founded in 1967, on the initiative of Polish engineer Roman Wajda, at 238–246 King Street, Hammersmith.
