Bethrah
Bethrah (foaled 21 March 2007) is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for winning the Irish 1,000 Guineas in 2010. After finishing unplaced on her only run as a two-year-old she reached her peak in the following spring, winning a maiden race and the Derrinstown Stud 1,000 Guineas Trial before taking the Irish 1000 Guineas. She was well beaten in her only subsequent race and was retired at the end of the year. Background Bethrah is a brown mare with a small white star (horse marking), star and a white sock (horse marking), sock on her left hind leg, bred in Ireland by Tullpark Ltd. As a foal in December 2007 she was put up for auction at Tattersalls but was bought back by Tullpark when the bidding stopped at 34,000 guinea (coin), guineas. Derrinstown Stud 1,000 Guineas Trial
The Irish 1,000 Guineas Trial is a Group races, Group 3 Flat racing, flat Horse racing, horse race in Ireland open to three-year-old thoroughbred Filly, fillies. It is run over a distance of 1 mile (1,609 metres) at Leopardstown Racecourse, Leopardstown in May. History The event was formerly known as the Wassl Race. It was named after Wassl, the winner of the Irish 2,000 Guineas in 1983. For a period it held Listed status. The name was changed to the Derrinstown Stud 1,000 Guineas Trial in 1990 when Derrinstown Stud began sponsoring the race. It was promoted to Group 3 level in 2002. Irish 1,000 Guineas
The Irish 1,000 Guineas is a Group 1 flat horse race in Ireland open to three-year-old thoroughbred fillies. It is run at the Curragh over a distance of 1 mile (1,609 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in May. History The event was established in 1922, a year after the launch of the Irish 2,000 Guineas. The inaugural running was won by Lady Violette. It is Ireland's equivalent of the 1000 Guineas, and in recent years it has taken place three weeks after that race. The field usually includes horses which previously contested the English version, and four have achieved victory in both events; Attraction in 2004, Finsceal Beo in 2007, Winter in 2017 and Hermosa in 2019. Dermot Weld
Dermot K. Weld (born 29 July 1948), a former jockey is one of Ireland's most successful racehorse trainers. He holds the record for the most winners trained in Ireland (2,578 set in August 2000). Weld maintains his stable, Rosewell House, in Curragh, Ireland. He is married, with two sons. Irish bookmakers, Paddy Power, tried to launch a campaign to change the name of the Galway Races to the Dermot Weld Retirement Fund Races; however, it proved to be unsuccessful. He was played by Brendan Gleeson in the feature film '' The Cup''. Education Educated at Newbridge College, a qualified veterinarian ( UCD 1970). Pat Smullen
Patrick Joseph Smullen (22 May 1977 – 15 September 2020), was an Irish jockey who won the Irish flat racing Champion Jockey title nine times. In a career running from 1992 to 2018 he rode 1,845 winners in Ireland and 47 in Britain. Amongst his biggest successes were riding Harzand (horse), Harzand to victories in the Epsom Derby and Irish Derby in 2016. He was stable jockey to Dermot Weld from 1999 until 2018. Background and apprenticeship Smullen was born in County Offaly and was introduced to riding and racing by his brother Sean, who worked for trainer Joanna Morgan. Indigenous (horse)
Indigenous () (1993–2004) was an Irish thoroughbred racehorse who also raced in Hong Kong. He was bred by Major John de Burgh at his Oldtown Stud in Naas, County Kildare, Ireland and sold as a yearling for 10,500 guineas at the Goffs Orby Sale in 1994. Purchased by trainer Kevin Prendergast, he was named "Qualtron." Racing in Ireland at age two, he won one of three starts and at age three, won two of five starts. With a record of 3-0-1 in 8 starts, he was sold to Mr. & Mrs. Pang Yuen Hing to race in Hong Kong where he was renamed Indigenous and became widely regarded as one of Hong Kong's best stayers. St James's Palace Stakes
The St James's Palace Stakes is a Group 1 flat horse race in Great Britain open to three-year-old colts. It is run at Ascot over a distance of 7 furlongs and 213 yards (1,603 metres). It is scheduled to be run each year in June. History The event is named after St James's Palace, a royal residence during the Tudor period. It was established in 1834, and the inaugural race was a walkover. The present system of race grading was introduced in 1971, and, for a period, the St James's Palace Stakes was classed at Group 2 level. It was promoted to Group 1 status in 1988. The St James's Palace Stakes usually features horses which ran previously in the 2,000 Guineas, the Poule d'Essai des Poulains or the Irish 2,000 Guineas. Soviet Song (18 February 2000 – 16 November 2015) was a racehorse bred and owned by Elite Racing Club. She was foaled on 18 February 2000, sired by Marju (IRE) out of Kalinka (IRE) (Soviet Star). My Emma (foaled 19 March 1993) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was lightly campaigned, making only eight racecourse appearances in three seasons. After finishing unplaced on her only start as a two-year-old she began her second season by finishing unplaced in the Lancashire Oaks before winning a minor race at Newmarket. She was then sent to France where she finished third in the Prix de Psyché before recording an upset win in the Group One Prix Vermeille. My Emma returned in 1997 and after finishing third on her seasonal debut she recorded a second Group One success in the Yorkshire Oaks. She was retired from racing at the end of the year and has had some success a broodmare. Viva Pataca () (foaled 7 May 2002) is a British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse, who achieved his greatest success when trained in Hong Kong. Background Bred by the Dukes of Devonshire and Roxburghe, he was out of the mare Comic and sired by English Group One winner, Marju. He was purchased by Neil Greig - Osborne House for 26,000 guineas at the 2003 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and given the name "Comic Strip." Marju (Chinese: 馬足; 12 March 1988 – 11 October 2016) was a Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. Background Marju was a dark bay or brown horse bred by Kilcarn Stud and owned by Hamdan Al Maktoum. He was sired by Last Tycoon out of Flame of Tara. He was a half-brother to Group One winner Salsabil. Racing career Trained by John Dunlop, Marju raced 7 times during his career and was ridden by Willie Carson each time. He won 3 races including the Craven Stakes and the St. James's Palace Stakes, as well as finishing second to Generous in the 1991 Epsom Derby. He won a total prize money of £282,640. Satono Crown ( ja, サトノクラウン, link=no, foaled 10 March 2012) is a Japanese Thoroughbred racehorse. He showed promising form as a two-year-old in 2014, winning both of his races including the Grade 3 Tokyo Sports Hai Nisai Stakes. As a three-year-old he won the Yayoi Sho, finished sixth when favourite for the Satsuki Sho, and ran third in the Tokyo Yushun. In 2016 he won the Kyoto Kinen but then displayed indifferent form before defeating a top-class international field in the Hong Kong Vase to establish himself as one of the best horses in the world over 2,400 metres. Sodium (horse)
Sodium (1963–1983) was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire best known for winning the classic St Leger Stakes in 1966. After running well without winning in 1965 he improved to become one of the best European colts of his generation in 1966 when he developed a rivalry with Charlottown. Sodium finished fourth behind Charlottown in The Derby but reversed the form to win both the Irish Derby and St Leger. He failed to reproduce his best form as a four-year-old and was retired to stud, where he had little success as a sire of winners in France and Japan.
