Betagi Upazila
Betagi ( bn, বেতাগী) is an upazila of Barguna District in the Division of Barisal, Bangladesh. Geography Betagi is located at . It has 22,156 households and a total area of 167.75 km2. Demographics According to the 1991 Bangladesh census, Betagi had a population of 110,926. Males constitute 49.95% of the population, and females 50.05%. The population aged 18 or over was 57,885. Betagi had an average literacy rate of 87% (7+ years), compared to the national average of 72.4%. Administration Betagi Upazila is divided into Betagi Municipality and seven union parishads: Betagi, Bibichini, Buramazumdar, Hosnabad, Kazirabad, Mokamia, and Sarishamuri. Barisal Division
Barishal Division is one of the eight administrative divisions of Bangladesh. Located in the south-central part of the country, it has an area of , and a population of 8,325,666 at the 2011 Census. Barguna ( bn, বরগুনা ''Borguna'') is a district in the Barisal Division, division of Barisal, Bangladesh. It is situated in the southern part of Bangladesh. Barguna subdivision was established in 1969 and promoted to district on 28 February 1984. History Barguna district was in the Sundarbans, Sundarban area. In the evolution of time, people started clearing the forest by cutting down the trees and started to live here. Wood merchants used to come here to collect woods from the forest. Etymology There is not enough strong proof of naming the district. The Asiatic Society of Bangladesh is a non political and non profit research organisation registered under both Society Act of 1864 and NGO Bureau, Government of Bangladesh. The Asiatic Society of Bangladesh was established as the Asiatic Society of East Pakistan in Dhaka in 1952 by a number of Muslim leaders, and renamed in 1972. Ahmed Hasan Dani, a noted Muslim historian and archaeologist of Pakistan played an important role in founding this society. He was assisted by Muhammad Shahidullah, a Bengali linguist. 1991 Bangladesh Census
In 1991, the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, conducted a national census in Bangladesh. They recorded data from all of the districts and upazilas and main cities in Bangladesh including statistical data on population size, households, sex and age distribution, marital status, economically active population, literacy and educational attainment, religion, number of children etc. According to the census, Hindus were 10.5 per cent of the population, down from 12.1 per cent as of 1981. Bangladesh have a population of 106,314,992 as per 1991 census report. Majority of 93,886,769 reported that they were Muslims, 11,184,337 reported as Hindus, 616,626 as Buddhists, 350,839 as Christians and 276,418 as others. Union Parishad
Union council ( bn, ইউনিয়ন পরিষদ, translit=iūniyan pariṣad, translit-std=IAST), also known as union parishad, rural council, rural union and simply union, is the smallest rural administrative and local government unit in Bangladesh. Each union council is made up of nine wards. Usually one village is designated as a ward. There are 4,562 unions in Bangladesh. A union council consists of a chairman and twelve members including three members exclusively reserved for women. Union councils are formed under the ''Local Government (Union Parishads) Act, 2009''.
