Beswick is a village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The village is situated on the A164 road, about north of Beverley and 6 miles south of Driffield. The civil parish is formed by the villages of Beswick and Kilnwick and the hamlet of Wilfholme. According to the 2011 UK census, Beswick parish had a population of 357, a slight decline on the 2001 UK census figure of 372. Beswick was the former home of P.H. Sissons & Sons, famous for wheelwrighting and building 'Wolds Wagons' since 1854. One of the wagons is at Skidby Windmill. Beswick, Greater Manchester
Beswick is an area of east Manchester, England. Historically in Lancashire, it neighbours the district of Openshaw to the east. The River Medlock and the Ashton Canal both run through it. History Around 1200–1230 it was known as ''Bexwic'' and it is believed to be a combination of a personal name and a settlement or dwelling place. Allan Beswick (born 8 October 1948 in Warrington, Lancashire) is a radio broadcaster who presents the late night phone-in on BBC Radio Manchester and BBC Radio Lancashire. Before starting his late-night phone show, Beswick presented the breakfast show on BBC Radio Manchester. Robert James Beswick (born 8 December 1984) is a former rugby league footballer who played as a or . He started his professional career in 2004 with the Wigan Warriors in the Super League. Frank Beswick, Baron Beswick, (21 August 1911 – 17 August 1987) was a British Labour Co-operative politician. Born in 1911 in Nottingham,'Strong Co-op voices', ''The Co-operative News'', p. 18, 13 May 2008. Beswick's father was a coal miner. He was educated in Nottingham and then at the Working Men's College in London. He became a journalist and was elected to the London County Council. He was in Spain during the Spanish Civil War. Already a qualified pilot, he joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve during the Second World War and served with Transport Command. A Sergeant Pilot, he was commissioned Pilot Officer in April 1942, and promoted Flying Officer in October 1942 and Flight Lieutenant in March 1944. He remained in the RAFVR after the war, resigning his commission in 1952. Beswick was elected to Parliament for Uxbridge in 1945 and served until 1959. Hannah Beswick
Hannah Beswick (1688 – February 1758), of Birchin Bower, Hollinwood, Oldham, Greater Manchester, was a wealthy woman who had a pathological fear of premature burial. Following her death in 1758, her body was embalmed and kept above ground, to be periodically checked for signs of life. The method of embalming was not recorded, but it probably involved replacing the blood with a mixture of turpentine and vermilion. The body was then put in an old clock case and stored in the house of Beswick's family physician, Dr Charles White. Beswick's apparently eccentric will made her a local celebrity, and visitors were allowed to view her at White's house. Beswick's mummified body was eventually bequeathed to the Museum of the Manchester Natural History Society, where she was put on display and acquired the soubriquet of the Manchester Mummy, or the Mummy of Birchin Bower. John Beswick Ltd, formerly J. W. Beswick, was a pottery manufacturer, founded in 1894 by James Wright Beswick and his sons John and Gilbert in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent. In 1969, the business was sold to Doulton & Co. Ltd. The factory closed in 2002 and the brand John Beswick was sold in 2004. The pottery was chiefly known for producing high-quality porcelain figurines such as farm animals and Beatrix Potter characters and have become highly sought in the collectables market. Richard John Beswick (born 7 December 1937 in Derby, Tasmania) is a former Australian politician and Deputy Premier of Tasmania. In 1979, he was elected to the Tasmanian House of Assembly representing Bass for the Liberal Party. He was a minister from 1982 to 1989, and Deputy Premier from 1992 to 1996. He retired from politics in 1998. At the 2015 Australia Day Honours, Beswick was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to the Parliament of Tasmania, to social welfare and primary industries, to local government, and to the community. Joseph Jabez Dean, Baron Dean of Beswick (3 June 1922 – 26 February 1999) was a British Labour Party politician. Dean was born and grew up in Manchester. He left school aged 14 and became an engineering apprentice, later working at the Gorton Locomotive Works and Metropolitan-Vickers. He was a councillor for Manchester Corporation from 1959 to 1974, serving as leader from 1969. He narrowly lost out on selection as the Labour candidate in the February 1974 general election to Gerald Kaufman but stood instead for Leeds West, where he was elected as Member of Parliament (MP). In the House of Commons, he was an assistant government whip from 1978 to 1979.
