Best is an unincorporated community in southwestern Reagan County in the western part of the U.S. state of Texas. It was portrayed in the Clyde Ragsdale novel ''The Big Fist''. Location and population Best is located in Reagan County about 85 miles (135 km) west of San Angelo, Texas and 10 miles (16 km) west of the county seat Big Lake. Reagan County is a county on the Edwards Plateau in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2010 census, its population was 3,385. The county seat is Big Lake. The county is named after John Henninger Reagan (1818-1905), who was the postmaster general of the Confederate States and also a U.S. senator, U.S. representative, and first chairman of the Railroad Commission of Texas. Big Lake is a small rural city in Reagan County, Texas, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the city population was 2,936. It is the county seat of Reagan County. Big Lake is situated atop the divide between the Rio Grande and Colorado River watersheds. The city takes its name from a dry lake, a unique dryland plains geographic feature located about two miles south of the city, through which St Hwy 137 passes. The dry lake, with no outlet, is more than two sections in size, making it the largest in Texas; it impounds water temporarily after high-runoff rain events, being used for grazing the remainder of the time. Texon is a small unincorporated desert hamlet in Reagan County, Texas, United States, in the western part of the state about half a mile south of the nearest highway. The town was originally an oil boomtown but is now near abandonment. There may be only one or two homes left in Texon, and no businesses or services.
