A hypocorism ( or ; from Ancient Greek: (), from (), 'to call by pet names', sometimes also ''hypocoristic'') or pet name is a name used to show affection for a person. It may be a diminutive form of a person's name, such as ''Izzy'' for Isabel or ''Bob (given name), Bob'' for Robert, or it may be unrelated. In linguistics, the term can be used more specifically to refer to the morphological process by which the standard form of the word is transformed into a form denoting affection, or to words resulting from this process. Bess Johnson
Bess Johnson ( circa 1902 - January 3, 1975) was an American actress best known for her work on old-time radio. During her time on the air, "she was the highest paid daytime radio artist." Early years Johnson was born in Keyser, West Virginia, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herman J. Johnson. She grew up in Elkins, West Virginia, with theatrical family roots: her father owned two theaters in addition to publishing a newspaper and being a state senator, while her mother was actress Ann Barnes. Johnson graduated from Davis & Elkins College. Her plans for a career as a singer ended when she lost her voice and learned after a tonsillectomy that she would not be able to sing again. Turning to drama as an alternative, she studied at Carnegie Mellon University, Carnegie Tech in Pittsburgh and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts (AADA) in New York. Bess Streeter Aldrich (pen name, Margaret Dean Stephens; February 17, 1881 – August 3, 1954) was an American author. Life and career Bess Genevra Streeter was born in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She was the last of the eight children of James Wareham and Mary Wilson Anderson Streeter. Attending high school in Cedar Falls, she was the winner of two magazine fiction-writing contests prior to graduating at age 17. After graduating from Iowa State Normal School with a teaching certificate, she taught school at several locations in Utah, later returning to Cedar Falls to earn an advanced degree in education. In 1907, she married Charles Sweetzer Aldrich, who had graduated with a law degree from Iowa State University and had been one of the youngest captains in the Spanish–American War. Early life and education Rogers was born into a musical family on Long Island, New York, and attended the Conservatory of Music at the State University of New York at Purchase for recording and composition. Elizabeth May Norriss, later Bess Norriss Tait, (17 May 1878 – January 1939) was an Australian artist. Life Norriss was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1878. She studied at Melbourne Art Gallery School and in 1905 at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. She specialised in watercolours and miniatures. In 1907, she was made a member of the Royal Society of Miniature Painters. She became a member of the British Watercolour Society and Society of Women Artists.
