Bespoke Shoes
Bespoke shoes or custom shoes are shoes made especially for a certain customer by a shoemaker. The feet are measured and a last for each foot is created. At the fitting, the customer tries the prototype pair of shoes made in an inexpensive leather and the shoemaker checks if anything needs to be changed. If so, the changes are applied to the lasts and the shoes are created with a precious leather. After the final lasts are created, the customer can order more pairs of shoes without more measurements and fittings. Stefano Bemer (1964–2012) was an Italian shoemaker, based in Florence. Bemer's clients included the actor Andy Garcia, designer Gianfranco Ferré and singer Julio Iglesias. The actor Sir Daniel Day-Lewis worked as an apprentice for Bemer for eight months between 1999 and 2000, showing up for work at 8am every day. Bemer’s website states, “What many do not know is what brought them together: perfectionism. The Santoni are a collection of statues carved into a rock face near Palazzolo Acreide, the ancient Akrai, in Sicily.
