Berta Berkovich Kohút
Berta Berkovich Kohút (; November 8, 1921 – February 14, 2021) was a Czechoslovakian-born Holocaust survivors, survivor of the Auschwitz concentration camp. By the time of her death in 2021, she was the last surviving seamstress who lived through internment at the camp by creating dresses for the wives of Nazi officers. Life Berta Berkovich, known as Betka or Bracha, was born on November 8, 1921, in Chepa, a small village then located in the eastern region of Czechoslovakia and now in Ukraine. Her father, Solomon Berkovich, was a tailor by profession and deaf-mute. Her mother, Karolína Štern was originally from , Hungary, and the family was Jewish. They relocated to Bratislava in 1926, where Solomon established his own successful tailoring firm, and came to employ three deaf-mute workers. Berta Zuckerkandl-Szeps (born Bertha Szeps; 13 April 1864 – 16 October 1945) was an Austrian writer, journalist and art criticism, art critic. Bertha Szeps was the daughter of Galician Jews, Galician Jewish liberal newspaper publisher Moritz Szeps and grew up in Vienna. She was married to the Hungarian anatomist Emil Zuckerkandl. In 1886 she married Zuckerkandl, who was then University of Graz professor of medicine. In 1888 the couple moved to Vienna, where he had obtained a professorship. From 1888 until 1938, Zuckerkandl led a major literary salon in Vienna, an informal weekly get-together, originally from a villa in Nußwaldgasse, Döbling, later in the Oppolzergasse near the Burgtheater. The Berta monastery ( ka, ბერთა, ) is a former Georgian Orthodox monastery at the village of Ortaköy (formerly Berta), Artvin Province, Turkey. It was built in the 8th or 9th century. The surviving structure is now used as a mosque. History The Monastery of the Mother of God in Berta or Bertay is first mentioned by the 10th-century Georgian author Giorgi Merchule as a part of Georgian monastic communities operating under the guidance of Grigol of Khandzta (759–861) in what then was the Georgian Bagratid principality of Klarjeti. The monastery sat on a hill overlooking what is now the village of Ortaköy and consisted of several structures, of which the main church was a domed structure faced with smoothly finished small blocks. The Berta (Bertha) or Funj or Benishangul are an ethnic group living along the border of Sudan and Ethiopia. They speak a Nilo-Saharan language that is not related to those of their Nilo-Saharan neighbors ( Gumuz, Uduk). The total population of Ethiopian-Bertas in Ethiopia is 208,759 people. Sudanese-Bertas number around 180,000. History Their origins are to be found in Sennar in eastern Sudan, in the area of the former Funj sultanate (1521-1804). During the 16th or 17th century, they migrated to western Ethiopia, in the area of the modern Benishangul-Gumuz Region. "Benishangul" is an Arabicized form of the original name ''Bela Shangul'', meaning "Rock of Shangul".
