Bert Hoare
Albert Alfred Hoare (22 November 1874 – 25 January 1962) was a South Australian politician. Born in Alberton, South Australia, he was educated at Port Adelaide and Mount Barker state schools. He worked as a farm labourer at Boolcunda East, near Quorn for sixteen years, and worked as shearer for 20 years. He was employed, perhaps as a storeman, at the Government workshops in Glanville, before running his own dairy farm. He returned to government service at the Islington Railway Workshops of the South Australian Railways. In 1921 he contested the South Australian House of Assembly seat of Murray, but was unsuccessful. In 1922 he was elected to the Australian Senate as an Australian Labor Party Senator for South Australia, succeeding Liberal Edward Vardon. He held the seat until his defeat in 1934. The Senate is the upper house of the Bicameralism, bicameral Parliament of Australia, the lower house being the House of Representatives (Australia), House of Representatives. The composition and powers of the Senate are established in Chapter I of the Constitution of Australia. Ern Klauer
Ernest Leopold William Klauer (1870 – 6 August 1915) was an engineer, trade unionist and politician in South Australia. History Ernest Klauer was born in Adelaide in 1870; his father, (Friedrich Wilhelm) August Klauer, born in Aschersleben, Germany and naturalized as a British subject in South Australia in 1874, was the proprietor of the White Hart Hotel in Hindley Street. Ernest was educated at the Grote Street Public School, then at an early age served an apprenticeship as fitter and turner at the Islington Railway Workshops of the South Australian Railways, and remained in the Government service for more than 22 years. At an early age he took an active interest in the trade union movement, and became a prominent member of the Railway Association. Pennington, South Australia
Pennington is a northern suburb of Adelaide, South Australia, located about 10 km from the Adelaide city centre. It is located in the City of Charles Sturt. The suburb is residential, apart from a light industrial pocket to the south. History The area now including Pennington was subdivided in 1909 by Captain Alfred Hodgeman, who named a section after his wife, the former Helen Pennington. The Pennington Post Office opened on 1 May 1939 and closed in 1997. Pennington was the site of a Migrant hostels of South Australia#Pennington Hostel, migrant hostel from 1950 until it closed in 1985. It was known as Finsbury Hostel from 1949 to 1966, then renamed to Pennington. It initially consisted of Nissen huts, Romney huts and Quonset huts, mostly second hand Army surplus. The Australian Natives' Association (ANA) was a mutual society founded in Melbourne, Australia in April 1871. It was founded by and for the benefit of native-born white Australians and membership was restricted exclusively to that group. The Association's objectives were to "raise funds by subscription, donations ... for the purpose of relieving sick members, and defraying expenses of funeral of members and their wives, relieving distressed widows and orphans and for the necessary expenses of the general management of the Society."
