Berri, South Australia
Berri is a town in the Riverland region of South Australia. It is 238 kilometres north-east of Adelaide, the capital of the state of South Australia and a few kilometres west of the SA-Victoria border. It is primarily an agricultural and viticultural town on the north bank of the Murray River. It is the original home of the juice company, Berri Ltd.. History The name "Berri" is from the local Aboriginal tribe, Meri, meaning "a wide bend in the river". The area was first explored by European settlers when Charles Sturt navigated the Murray River. Its first impetus for settlement came when paddle steamers came down the River Murray and a refuelling stop was developed. This was to become Berri. The area was also part of Cobdogla Station pastoral run before it was broken up for closer farming. In 1910, irrigation was established and Berri was proclaimed as a town in 1911. Berri Oval
Berri Oval is a cricket ground in the town of Berri, South Australia, Australia. The first recorded match on the ground came when South Australia Country XI played the touring West Indians in 1961. A number of Youth One Day Internationals were held at the ground in the late 1980s. Having never previously held a senior cricket match, it was selected as venue for the 1992 Cricket World Cup, staging a One Day International between Sri Lanka and the West Indies. This match, which is also the only List A game to be staged there, resulted in a West Indies win by 91 runs. Senior cricket hasn't returned to the ground since. In the summer, it is home to the local cricket club the Berri Demons, while in the winter, the football club (also known as the Demons) plays there. In August 2003, Greek football club Panathinaikos played the Australian Australs at the ground as part of the International Soccer Challenge. Berri Football Club
Berri Football Club (commonly known as The Demons) is an Australian rules football club playing in the Riverland Football League (RFL) in South Australia. The club has an illustrious history winning many premierships, most recently the A-Grade in 2010. The Club The Berri Football Club headquarters is also the RFL headquarters. The current coach is Clint Ridgeway and the captain is Evan Penaluna. The president of the club is Ronald Foulds. In 2002, the club won the RFL premiership, coming from eight goals down in the second quarter to secure the greatest comeback in an RFL grand final. The club was captained by Sam Ingerson in that year. In 2010 they defeated arch rivals Barmera-Monash to win premiership after finishing on top of the table. Berri Barmera Council is a local government area in the Riverland region of South Australia. It includes the towns of Barmera, Berri, Cobdogla, Glossop, Katarapko, Loveday and Winkie, and parts of Monash and Overland Corner. History The Berri Barmera Council was created on 1 October 1996 with the amalgamation of the District Council of Barmera and the District Council of Berri. The District Council of Berri had been created in 1922, 11 years after the town was proclaimed. Its first major project was to provide reliable electricity to the entire area. It bought the Berri Electric Supply Company in 1936 to facilitate this, and later sold it to the Electricity Trust of South Australia, a state government agency. The District Council of Barmera had been created as the "District Council of Cobdogla" on 17 June 1925 and been renamed Barmera in 1937.
