Antonio Berney
Antonio Berney (died 1784) was a French teacher living in Chile, and one of the conspirators in the Conspiracy of the Tres Antonios. Berney arrived in Chile around 1776, where he became teacher of Latin and Mathematics at the Convictorio Carolino, in Santiago. He was a constant reader of the Encyclopédie, and in 1780, he formulated a plan to establish Chile as an independent republic and convinced Antonio Gramusset and José Antonio de Rojas to join him in trying to carry it out. They were soon discovered, denounced and arrested on January 1, 1781. The Berney Baronetcy, of Park Hall in Reedham in the County of Norfolk, is a title in the Baronetage of England. It was created on 5 May 1620 for Richard Berney, Sheriff of Norfolk in 1622. Family history The Berney (Barney) name comes from that place which is in the hundred of North Greenhow, Norfolk, and is recorded as ''Berlej'' in the Domesday Book.. The family can be traced back to Sir Thomas de Berney, who in the reign of Edward III, acquired the manor of Reedham through his marriage with Margaret, daughter and heir of William de Reedham. His descendant Henry Berney (died 1584) moved the family seat from near Reedham Church, and built Reedham Hall within a park. It was also known as Park Hall. It was sold in 1696 and gutted in a fire in 1750. Henry's eldest son, Sir Richard Berney, was Sheriff of Norfolk in 1610. He married Juliana, daughter of judge Sir Thomas Gawdy of Redenhall. Jon Berney
Jon Berney (born 26 March 1976) is an Australian world champion lightweight rower. He won a gold medal at the 1997 World Rowing Championships in Aiguebelette with the lightweight men's eight. Club and state rowing Berney's was educated and took up rowing at Geelong Grammar School. His senior club rowing was from the Barwon Rowing Club in Geelong. International representative rowing In 1997, Berney made his Australian representative debut in the Lyall McCarthy coached men's lightweight eight. At the 1997 World Rowing Championships in Aiguebelette, Berney rowed in the four seat of that boat to a final victory by 0.03 seconds with only 1.5 lengths separating the field. Berney won his first and only World Championship title. In 1998, Berney rowed with his team-mate Alastair Isherwood from the 1997 eight in a lightweight coxless pair. Lieutenant-Colonel Leonard Berney (11 April 1920 – 7 March 2016) was a British soldier who was one of the first British officers at the liberation of Bergen-Belsen.
