Bernese Mittelland
Bern-Mittelland District in the Canton of Bern was created on 1 January 2010. It is part of the Bern-Mittelland administrative region, and is the only district in the region. It contains 75 municipalities with an area of and a population () of . It is made up of the valley of the rivers Aare and Emme, some of the foothills of the Bernese Alps, as well as the plain around the capital Bern, and has many small farms and hilly forested regions with small to mid-sized towns scattered throughout. It is perhaps best known by foreigners and visitors for the Emmental. The classic Swiss cheese with holes Emmentaler comes from this region's forests and pastures, of hilly and low mountainous countryside in the range. Brenzikofen
Brenzikofen is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. History Brenzikofen is first mentioned in 1236 as ''Brenzichovin''. During the Late Middle Ages Interlaken Abbey owned much of the land in the village. The remainder of the land was owned by wealthy citizens of the towns of Bern and Thun. During the Middle Ages, Diessenberg Castle was built on Bürglen hill above the village. Little is known about the castle and today only portions of the wall and ditch are still visible. Bern gradually acquired more rights in the village over the following centuries. In 1528, Bern adopted the Protestant Reformation and secularized Interlaken Abbey and all of its land holdings, including Brenzikofen. Beginning in 1652, it was part of the district of Thun. Bremgarten bei Bern is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. History Bremgarten bei Bern is first mentioned in 1180 as ''Bremecart''. In 1236 it was mentioned as ''Bremegarten'' and until 1870 it was known as ''Bremgarten-Herrschaft''. The oldest trace of settlements in Bremgarten are from the Roman era and include a settlement, cobbled roads and Roman coins. During the Middle Ages there was a castle and village at Bremgarten, though no trace remains. However, in 1978, the outer curtain wall of the old castle was discovered. The castle, the home of the Lords of Bremgarten, was located at a narrow point on the Aare peninsula. The castle was the center of a barony that stretched along the Aare river at least as far as from Worblaufen to Kirchlindach. Bowil
Bowil is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. History Bowil is first mentioned in 1299 as ''Bonwile''. The village was once part of the ''Herrschaft'' of Signau and the Freiherren of Signau built their castles, Alt-Signau and Neu-Signau, between Bowil and Signau villages. Today, the municipal border has been redrawn and the ruins of both castles are in Bowil. During the Middle Ages, Bowil was part of the lands of the Freiherr of Signau, but other distant landowners and local farmers owned rights or property in the village. Bolligen
Bolligen is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district of the canton of Bern, Switzerland. In the historical center is a twelfth-century church, with a benefice barn and parsonage from the 16th century. History Bolligen is first mentioned in 1180 as ''Bollingin''. Traces of a neolithic settlement were discovered in Burech. There are traces of an earthen fort of an indeterminate age above Flugbrunnen, along with medieval earthen forts at Grauholz and on the Bantiger. Bolligen, Muri bei Bern, Stettlen and Vechigen were the first villages to come under Bern's control as Bern began its expansion into a city-state. Biglen
Biglen is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. History Biglen is first mentioned in 894 as ''Pigiluna''. In 1236 it was mentioned as ''Biglun''. The earliest traces of a settlement in the area are scattered Roman era artifacts which have been found throughout the municipality. Very little is known about the village in the Middle Ages. In the 14th century Heinrich von Biglen, a citizen of Bern, acquired much of the village. He donated the village to the Niederspital of Bern in 1359. The village was part of several districts before being assigned to the Amtsbezirk Konolfingen in 1803.
