Bernborough
Bernborough (1939–1960) was an outstanding Australian-bred Thoroughbred racehorse who competed from 1941 to 1946. He carried heavy weights in 15 consecutive wins that included the Doomben 10,000 while carrying 10 stone 5 pounds. Bernborough was foaled at Rosalie Plains near the township of Oakey in the Darling Downs in Queensland. The bay colt was by the good sire Emborough (GB) from Bern Maid by Bernard (GB), who was the paternal grandson of Gainsborough, winner of the English Triple Crown in 1918. Racing record Bernborough first raced under the ownership of A.E.Hadwin. A Queensland trainer, J. Roberts, then leased the horse. He came to prominence racing at Toowoomba's Clifford Park when ridden to his first six wins by Les Watterson. The Chipping Norton Stakes is an Australian Turf Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race for horses three years old and older, run at weight for age, over a distance of 1600 metres at Randwick Racecourse, Sydney, Australia in February or March. Prizemoney is A$600,000. History The race is major preparatory race for the Group 1 Doncaster Handicap and Sydney Cup as the winner is exempt from ballot for entry into each race. The race is named after the suburb Chipping Norton located in Liverpool located 27 kilometres south-west of Sydney. The race is usually held together with the Liverpool City Cup as part of the City of Liverpool festivities. The Doomben Cup is a Brisbane Racing Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race for horses three years old and older, run under Weight for Age conditions over a distance of 2000 metres at Doomben Racecourse, Brisbane, Australia during the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival. Total prize money is A$1,000,000. History The race was first held in 1933 as a principal race won by Pentheus in a time of 2.05.7 over the 10 furlongs. Among the outstanding stayers to win the Doomben Cup in its early years include Bernborough in 1946. The New Zealand bred Rough Habit won the race three times from 1991–1993. The only dual winners are Earlwood (1959–1960) and Scenic Shot (2009 and 2011). The Doomben 10,000 is a Brisbane Racing Club Group 1 Thoroughbred Weight for Age horse race, run over a distance of 1200 metres at Doomben Racecourse, Brisbane, Australia during the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival. Total prize money is A$1,000,000. The race is considered one of the premier sprint races in Queensland racing. History The race was changed to the Doomben 10,000 after the £10,000 prize money on offer, which at the time was the richest sprint in Australia. Notable sprinters to win the race are Chief De Beers (1995, 1998), Falvelon (2001-02), Prince Trialia in 1990–91, and Black Onyx in 1969–70. Included in the list are former greats Bernborough in 1946 and Manikato in 1979. In July 1951, then apprentice Aboriginal jockey Merv Maynard (whose career spanned nearly five decades, in which he rode over 1,500 winners) was heading for a win on Waratah King when the horse came down, and he was thrown. The Newmarket Handicap is a Victoria Racing Club Group 1 Thoroughbred open handicap horse race over a distance of 1200 metres, at Flemington Racecourse, Melbourne, Australia on Super Saturday in March during the VRC Autumn Racing Carnival. Prize money is A$1,500,000. History The Newmarket Handicap is considered Australia's premier sprint race. First run in 1874, the brainchild of VRC committeeman Captain Frederick Standish who thought a "short and merry" race over six furlongs would add interest to the Club's autumn program. Caulfield Stakes
The Might and Power, registered as the Caulfield Stakes is a Melbourne Racing Club Group One, Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race run under weight-for-age conditions, for three-year-olds and upwards, run over a distance of 2,000 metres at Caulfield Racecourse, Melbourne, Australia. Prizemoney is A$1,000,000. History The race is held annually in October on Caulfield Guineas day, the first day of the MRC Spring Carnival. The conditions of the race in regard to distance and WFA is similar to the W. S. Cox Plate, held a fortnight after the Caulfield Stakes, and many Cox Plate contenders will use this race as a preparatory race. During World War II the race was run at Flemington Racecourse. The 2016 edition of the race attracted only three entries, the smallest ever G1 race in Australia with champion mare Winx scaring off potential rivals.
