French National Monotype 1924
For the 1924 Olympic Monotype sailing a National Dinghy Class from France was used. Some documents refer to this class as the Meulan and in France as Monotype national. It might originate (or vice versa) as the Scheldejol a Class originated in Antwerp, Belgium and also used in The Netherlands but is a little different at certain measurements. Meulan-en-Yvelines (; formerly just ''Meulan'') is a commune in the Yvelines department in the Île-de-France region in north-central France. It hosted part of the sailing events for the 1900 Summer Olympics held in neighboring Paris, and would do so again twenty-four years later. History In 1435 as a part of the Hundred Years' War, Ambroise de Loré and Jean de Dunois defeated the English nearby. Meulan hosted the first regatta in the sailing event at the 1900 Summer Olympics. The International Eight Metre class are class of racing yachts. Eight Metre boats (often called "Eights" or 8mR) are a '' construction class'', meaning that the boats are not identical but are all designed to meet specific measurement formula, in this case International rule. Before WW II, Eights were the most prestigious international yacht racing class and they are still raced around the world. "Eight metre" in class name does not, somewhat confusingly, refer to length of the boat, but product of the formula. 8mR boats are on average some 15 metres long. The 8 Metre was a sailing event on the Sailing at the 1924 Summer Olympics program in Le Havre. A program of matches and semi-finals were scheduled. In case of a tie sail-off's could be held. 25 sailors, on 5 boats from 5 nations competed. A sixth entry from Italy did not show. The French National Monotype was a sailing event on the Sailing at the 1924 Summer Olympics program in Meulan. A program of elimination and semi-finals and, where needed, sail-offs were scheduled. 17 sailors from 17 nation competed using eight boats The eight boats were provided by the French Olympic Committee. A rotation scheme was used to accommodate all 17 sailors. The sails were swapped so that every sailor used the same sail number every time. The windvane on top of the mast was in the colors of the sailor's national flag. Race schedule In this class a total of 17 competitors participated. The France Olympic Committee had made available a total of 8 mostly identical boats. So here the fleet was divided in two flights of eight. In each elimination series one country was exempt and was automatically qualified for the semi final. Per flight the best two boats earned a place in the semi final.
