Bernard Cohen (Australian Author)
Bernard Cohen (born 1963) is an Australian writer, the author of five novels, a book of short stories and a children's picture book. Career Cohen's first novel, ''Tourism'', was published in 1992. ''The Blindman's Hat'' won the Australian/Vogel Literary Award in 1996. Cohen's fifth novel, The Antibiography of Robert F Menzies, won the inaugural Russell Prize for Humour Writing. Cohen's short stories have been widely anthologised, including in the ''Penguin Century of Australian Stories'', ''Best Australian Stories 2002'' and ''2009'' and ''Picador New Writing''. His first collection of short stories, ''When I Saw the Animal'' (UQP), was published in 2018. From 1990 to 1991 he was co-editor of the literary journal ''Editions Review''. In 2006 Cohen founded The Writing Workshop', which runs creative writing programs for children in New South Wales, and online. ''The Australian''/Vogel Literary Award is an Australian literary award for unpublished manuscripts by writers under the age of 35. The prize money, currently A$20,000, is the richest and most prestigious award for an unpublished manuscript in Australia. The rules of the competition include that the winner's work be published by Allen & Unwin.Goodwin (1986) p. 270 The award was initiated in 1979 by Niels Stevns and is a collaboration between ''The Australian'' newspaper, the publisher Allen & Unwin, and Stevns & Company Pty Ltd. Russell Prize
The Russell Prize (Russell Prize for Humour Writing) is an Australian literary prize awarded every second year by the State Library of New South Wales to a humorous book. It was established in 2014 through a donation by Peter Wentworth Russell, "a farmer, businessman and passionate reader". A shortlist of six books is selected and publicly announced before the prize, which comes with a cash award of $10,000. In 2021 a second category, Humour Writing for Young People, was introduced for a work aimed at the 5–12 age group. Both winners were announced in June 2021.
