Bernard Briskin
Bernard Briskin (May 21, 1924 – February 29, 2020) was an American businessman, investor and philanthropist. He was the co-founder of Gelson's Markets, a supermarket chain in Southern California, and was its chairman until 2014. Early life Bernard Briskin was born May 21, 1924. His father, Samuel J. Briskin, was a film producer and philanthropist. Briskin was educated at the Black-Foxe Military Institute and Fairfax High School in Los Angeles, California, until he went to prep school in New England at Worcester Academy, and returned to the West coast, where he graduated from Beverly Hills High School in 1943. During World War II, he served at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton for 33 months. Black-Foxe Military Institute
The Black-Foxe Military Institute was a private school in Hollywood, California, USA. It was located adjacent to the Wilshire Country Club to the west and south and the Los Angeles Tennis Club to the east. Black-Foxe was founded in 1928 by Charles E. Toberman, a Hollywood developer and financier, and Majors Earle Foxe and Harry Lee Black, both World War I veterans, on the site formerly occupied by Urban Military Academy, where Black had been commandant; Foxe was president, remaining in that post until 1960, Black commandant of cadets and Major Harry Gaver headmaster. From the start the school attracted the sons of people involved in the film industry, thanks to its location and Foxe's Hollywood connections. Temple Israel of Hollywood is a Reform Jewish synagogue in Hollywood, California founded in 1926. Services were originally held in the Hayakawa Mansion before the first Temple Israel building was established on Ivar Street under the leadership of Rabbi Isadore Isaacson. Temple Israel moved to its current location on Hollywood Boulevard in 1948. It has traditionally had a large number of film actors, writers, directors and producers as members. Duarte () is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. As of the 2020 census, the city population was 21,727. It is bounded to the north by the San Gabriel Mountains, to the north and west by the cities of Bradbury and Monrovia, to the south by the city of Irwindale, and to the east by the cities of Irwindale and Azusa. Duarte is located on historic U.S. Route 66 which today follows Huntington Drive through the middle of the city.
