Berkeley Station (Southern Pacific Railroad)
Berkeley Station was the name of the principal railroad station in Berkeley, California from 1878 to 1911. It was located in what is now downtown Berkeley, on Shattuck Avenue between University Avenue and Center Street. The tract is today occupied by Shattuck Square and Berkeley Square. The name continued in use after 1911 although the station was no longer the main rail depot for Berkeley. History Berkeley Station began as the "Berkeley Terminus" of the Central Pacific Railroad's Berkeley Branch Railroad, established in 1876, two years before Berkeley was incorporated. In 1878, the railroad was extended northward several blocks, so the "terminus" was renamed Berkeley Station. In 1885, the Central Pacific's operation of the Berkeley Branch was turned over to its affiliate, the Southern Pacific. Shattuck Avenue
Shattuck Avenue is a major city street running north–south through Berkeley, California, and Oakland, California. At its southern end, the street branches from Telegraph Avenue in Oakland's Temescal district, then ends at Indian Rock Park in the Berkeley Hills to the north. Shattuck Avenue is the main street of Berkeley, forming the spine of that city's downtown, and the site of the Gourmet Ghetto in North Berkeley. The street was named for Francis Kittredge Shattuck, an early landowner and booster who later served as Mayor of Oakland. Shattuck was largely responsible for the original construction of the road as well as for a railroad built along its route. Berkeley Station (Atchison, Topeka And Santa Fe Railway)
Berkeley station was the name of an Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (ATSF) railroad station in Berkeley, California from 1904 to the 1950s. It is located on University Avenue between Acton and Chestnut Streets. The station building is today occupied by The Berkeley School. The station opened in May 1904 as the ATSF was extended from its previous terminus in Richmond to a new end of the line in Oakland over the former California and Nevada Railroad. After passenger operations ceased in the 1950s, the station was used as a bus depot until those services were discontinued the following decade. The city of Berkeley acquired the railroad's right of way through city limits in 1978, but the Berkeley depot was retained by ATSF. The station building was then converted to a restaurant, and functioned in that capacity until 2000. In 2001, it was purchased by the Berkeley Montessori School and redeveloped into a private school. Berkeley station is an Amtrak station in Berkeley, California, served by Amtrak California's ''Capitol Corridor'' service. The station is located under the University Avenue overpass just west of 4th Street. It is served directly by AC Transit bus routes 51B and 802; additionally, AC Transit Transbay routes FS, G, and Z stop nearby at 6th Street. History The stop first appeared on timetables as West Berkeley, differentiating it from the then-operating downtown station. The depot was built by the Southern Pacific in 1913, although it has since been turned into a restaurant. Amtrak California service at Berkeley began in 1986 with the twice-daily ''San Joaquins'', which then operated between Oakland and Bakersfield.
