The Berkeley Music Group is a 501(c)(3) non-profit based in Berkeley, California. It was formed in 2012 by David Mayeri, who was formerly chief operating officer of Bill Graham Presents to renovate the UC Theatre The UC Theatre is a music venue on University Avenue (Berkeley, California), University Avenue near Shattuck Avenue in Downtown Berkeley, Berkeley, California, Downtown Berkeley, Berkeley, California, Berkeley, California, United States. From 1976 .... The UC Theatre was a movie theatre from its opening in 1917 to its closing in 2001. The Berkeley Music Group reopened the theatre in Spring 2016 as a music venue, and will present between 75-100 shows per year, in a wide variety of genres. Berkeley Music Group raised $5.6 million through private donations and grants, with Taube Philanthropies giving them a $1.3 million matching grant. Berkeley ( ) is a city on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay in northern Alameda County, California, United States. Bill Graham Presents
Bill Graham (born Wulf Wolodia Grajonca; January 8, 1931 – October 25, 1991) was a German-American impresario and rock concert promoter from the 1960s until his death in 1991 in a helicopter crash. On July 4, 1939, he was sent from Germany to France due to political uncertainty in his home country. At age 10, he settled into a foster home in the Bronx, New York. Graham graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School and subsequently from City College with a business degree. In the early 1960s, Graham moved to San Francisco, and in 1965, began to manage the San Francisco Mime Troupe. He had teamed up with local Haight Ashbury promoter Chet Helms to organize a benefit concert, then promoted several free concerts. This eventually turned into a profitable full-time career and he assembled a talented staff. The UC Theatre is a music venue on University Avenue near Shattuck Avenue in Downtown Berkeley, Berkeley, California, United States. From 1976 until 2001, it was a movie theater known for a revival house presentation of films. In 2013, The Berkeley Music Group was formed as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with the mission to renovate and operate the UC Theater as live music venue. It reopened its doors on April 7, 2016. History Opened on June 30, 1917 as a first run theater, the 1,466-seat theater was initially owned by Luther H. Williamson and Richard H. Bradshaw and managed by Albert H. Moore and John P. Dean.
