Berezan River
The Berezan is a Ukrainian river flowing into the Berezan Estuary of the Black Sea. The river is 49 km long, the catchment area is 890 km2. Slope 1.5 m / km. The trapezoidal river valley is 2 km wide. The channel is meandering, in the upper reaches 5 m wide, 1.2–1.5 m deep. In the summer it partially dries up. It is used for irrigation. The river originates from the village of Stepove and flows through the territory of Voznesensk and Mykolaiv Raions of Mykolaiv Oblast. In 1974, near the village of Yablonya, in the Berezan River basin, burial 11 of mound 11 was investigated, which belongs to the Sivashovka-type monuments of the 2nd half of the 7th century - early 8th century. Berezan' Runestone
The Berezan' Runestone ( X UaFv1914;47) was discovered in 1905 by Ernst von Stern, professor at Odessa, on Berezan' Island (also known as the Island of St Aitherios) where the Dnipro River meets the Black Sea. The runestone is wide, high and thick, and kept in the museum of Odesa.Braun & Arne 1914:44 It was made by a Varangian (Viking) trader named Grani in memory of his business partner Karl.Thunberg 2011:54-55 They were probably from Gotland, Sweden. Berezan Island
Berezan (Cyrillic: Береза́нь; Ancient Greek: Borysthenes; former tr, Pirezin) is an island in the Black Sea at the entrance of the Dnieper-Bug Estuary, Ochakiv Raion, Mykolaiv Oblast, Ukraine. Located 8 kilometers from the city of Ochakov and 4 kilometers from the resort village of Rybakovka. It is often being confused with the artificial island of Pervomaisky that is located within Dnieper-Bug Estuary. The Berezan island measures approximately 900 metres in length by 320 metres in width, the height of the northern part is 3-6 metres, the southern part is 21 metres. It is separated from the mainland (to which it may have been connected long ago) by about a mile and a half of shallow water. Berezan is an integral part of the historical and archaeological reserve of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine "Olvia". The island is uninhabited. Sulz, Ukraine
Sulz (Ukrainian or russian: Шульцово) was a village in Mykolaiv Raion of Mykolaiv Oblast in southern Ukraine. It was located along the east bank of the Berezan River just to the southeast of the village of Landau. The village was established in 1809 by Roman Catholic German immigrants to the Berezaner Valley, then part of the Kherson Governorate of the Russian Empire. It was abandoned after the remaining German residents were driven from the area by the advancing Soviet army in 1944. Shyrokolanivka
Shyrokolanivka ( uk, Широколанівка, russian: Широколановка) is a village in the Mykolaiv Raion of the Mykolaiv Oblast in southern Ukraine. It is located along the east bank of the Berezan River. Name The name ''Landau'' was used for the settlement until 1935. The village was renamed ''imeni Karla Libknekhta'' (имени Карла Либкнехта) from 1935 to 1945. It was renamed ''Shyrokolanivka'' after the remaining German residents were driven from the area by the advancing Soviet army. History The village was established in 1810 as Landau by Roman Catholic German immigrants to the Beresaner Valley, then part of the Kherson Governorate of the Russian Empire. Most of the colonists (66 families) came from Rheinhessen-Pfalz, and others (27 families) from Alsace. A teachers' training school was founded in the village in 1907.
