Bay ( so, Baay, ar, ุจุงูŠ, it, Bai) is an administrative region (''Regions of Somalia, gobol'') in southern Somalia. Overview It is bordered by the Somali regions of Bakool, Hiran, Somalia, Hiran, Lower Shebelle (Shabeellaha Hoose), Middle Juba (Jubbada Dhexe), and Gedo. Baidoa used to be the capital of the old Upper Jubaland, Juba region, which today also includes Gedo and Bakool, as well as most parts of the Middle Juba region. Present regions were created in the 1970s by the then ruling military regime. The capital of Bay is Baidoa. Despite the name Bay, it is landlocked and nowhere near the Indian Ocean shores. Demographics The region is mainly inhabited by the Rahanweyn people. 2020 East African Express Airways Shootdown
The 2020 East African Express Airways Brasilia crash was an aviation accident involving an East African Express Airways Embraer EMB 120 Brasilia that was on approach to Berdale on a chartered cargo flight from Baidoa Airport, Somalia on 4 May 2020 when it was allegedly shot down by ground troops of the Ethiopian National Defense Force. All 6 occupants, four non-revenue passengers and two crew, were killed. The plane was carrying medical supplies to assist with the COVID-19 pandemic in Somalia, as well as mosquito nets. COVID-19 Pandemic In Somalia
The COVID-19 pandemic was confirmed to have reached Somalia on 16 March 2020 when the first case was confirmed in Mogadishu. The Somali Prime Minister, Hassan Ali Khaire announced that the government has set aside five million dollars to deal with the disease. The Somali Medical Association is concerned that the death toll in the country will be huge and that Somalia will not be able to recover from the economic effects due to poor working relations between central government and federal states which leads to lack of control by central government, as well and the lack of healthcare infrastructure.
