''Beppo: A Venetian Story'' is a lengthy poem by Lord Byron, written in Venice in 1817. ''Beppo'' marks Byron's first attempt at writing using the Italian ''ottava rima'' metre, which emphasized satiric digression. It is the precursor to Byron's most famous and generally considered best poem, ''Don Juan''. The poem contains 760 verses, divided into 95 stanzas. Narrative The poem tells the story of a Venetian lady, Laura, whose husband, Giuseppe (or "Beppo" for short), has been lost at sea for the past three years. According to Venetian customs she takes on a '' Cavalier Servente'', simply called "the Count". When the two of them attend the Venetian Carnival, she is closely observed by a Turk who turns out to be her missing husband. Beppo is a monkey superhero appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics, primarily those featuring Superman. Publication history Created by Otto Binder and George Papp, he first appeared in ''Superboy'' #76 (October 1959). He made sixteen appearances in ''Superman'' comics during the Silver Age of Comic Books. Joseph Schmid
Joseph "Beppo" Schmid (24 September 1901 – 30 August 1956) was a German general who served in the ''Luftwaffe'' during World War II. Schmid commanded the Luftwaffe's Military Intelligence Branch during the Battle of Britain. Career A close friend of Hermann Göring, Schmid commanded the Luftwaffe's Military Intelligence Branch (''Abteilung 5'' as Chief IC) from 1 January 1938 to 9 November 1942. Adolf Galland later criticized Schmid for doing nothing to upgrade the low quality of the intelligence service. Schmid was accused of inventing intelligence situation data about British aircraft losses during Battle for Britain. Beppo Römer
Josef "Beppo" Römer (; 17 November 1892 – 25 September 1944) was a member of the Freikorps Oberland, one of the paramilitary organizations that sprang up around Germany as soldiers returned in defeat from World War I. He was later an organizer for the Communist Party of Germany (KPD). He was involved in German resistance to Nazism and List of assassination attempts on Adolf Hitler, plotted to assassinate Hitler in 1934. Römer was executed in 1944 by the Nazi regime.
