Benzdorp
Benzdorp is a village in the Sipaliwini District of Suriname. It is named after the English consul and bullion dealer H.J.W. Benz. Geography The village lies in the jungle of the Tapanahony, Tapanahony resort, near the Lawa River (South America), Lawa River that forms the border with French Guiana, an overseas region and further north, in the Marowijne. Near Benzdorp is the rapids of Oemankrassiabra. Downstream (to the North) lies the town of Cottica and upstream is Anapaike. To the east is Nouveau Wakapou. To the Southeast, across the Lawa River is the French Guyanese place Maripasoula. Notable landmark Southwest of the village is Fatu Switie, a mountain ridge with an altitude of about 375 meters. 2008 Suriname Plane Crash
On Thursday, April 3, 2008, an Antonov An-28 operated by Blue Wing Airlines (Aircraft registration, registration PZ-TSO) crashed upon landing at Lawa Antino Airport in Benzdorp, Suriname. The plane carried 17 passengers and a crew of 2, all of whom perished. The crash occurred around 11:00 am UTC-3, ART (14:00 UTC). Initial media reports indicated that the airplane had to abort the landing, as the runway was being used by another Bluewing AN-28 aircraft. The airplane attempted a go-around, but failed to gain height and crashed into a mountain. Casualties The pilot, Soeriani Jhauw-Verkuijl, was the wife of Blue Wing Airlines president Amichand Jhauw. Her brother and colleague was an eyewitness to the crash. Also among the casualties was co-pilot Robert Lackin, as well as a family of six from Antecume Pata, citizens of French Guiana. Lawa Antino Airstrip is an airstrip serving the gold mining concessions near the town of Benzdorp in Suriname. The runway is southwest of the town. Nouveau Wakapou
Nouveau Wakapou, also Nouveau Wacapou, is an Aluku maroon village situated on the Lawa River in French Guiana. The village is located across the Surinamese gold mining village of Benzdorp. Overview In the early 20th century gold was discovered in the region which caused an exponential growth of Nouveau Wakapou. By 1938, the population was about 1,000 people and it was largest village of the region, however the village started to decline from the 1950s onwards. Around 2022, the population was around 150 people and it was mainly inhabited by Aluku maroons. Most of the inhabitants adhere to the Seventh-day Adventist Church. In 2003, a school was built in Nouveau Wakapou. There are no shops in the village, and it is dependent on Maripasoula or Benzdorp. Fatu Switie
Fatoe Switie Mountains ( nl, Fatoe Switiegebergte) is a mountain range in the Sipaliwini District of Suriname. The highest peak is about 375 metres. In 1902, Governor Cornelis Lely of Suriname decided that the Lawa Railway would be built by the government. The railway line would transport gold from the foot of the Fatoe Switie Mountains to Paramaribo. The proposed railway line was only half completed from Paramaribo due to disappointing gold finds. Sipaliwini is the largest district of Suriname, located in the south. Sipaliwini is the only district that does not have a regional capital, as it is directly administered by the national government in Paramaribo. Tapanahony
Tapanahoni is a resort in Suriname, located in the Sipaliwini District. Its population at the 2012 census was 13,808. Tapanahoni is a part of Sipaliwini which has no capital, but is directly governed from Paramaribo. Tapanahony is an enormous resort which encompasses a quarter of the country of Suriname. The most important town is Diitabiki (old name: Drietabbetje) which is the residence of the granman of the Ndyuka people since 1950, and the location of the oracle. The disputed area of south-east Suriname between the Marowini (the eastern tributary river) and the Litani rivers belongs to the Tapanahoni resort. History The Ndyuka people are of African descent, and were shipped as slaves to Suriname in the 17-18th century to work on Dutch-owned colonial plantations. Cornelis Lely
Cornelis Lely (; 23 September 1854 – 22 January 1929) was a Dutch politician of the Liberal Union (LU) and civil engineer. He oversaw the passage of an act of parliament authorising construction of the Zuiderzee Works, a huge project – designed to his own plans – that turned the Zuiderzee into a lake and made possible the conversion of a vast area of former seabed into dry land. Aluku
The Aluku are a Bushinengue ethnic group living mainly on the riverbank in Maripasoula in southwest French Guiana. The group are sometimes called Boni, referring to the 18th-century leader, Bokilifu Boni. History The Aluku are an ethnic group in French Guiana whose people are descended from African slaves who escaped in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries from the Dutch plantations in what is now known as Suriname. Intermarrying with Native Americans, toward the end of the eighteenth century, they initially settled east of the Cottica River in what is nowadays the Marowijne District in Suriname.
