Benton Lake is a 5,600 acre wetland in the U.S. state of Montana, and within both the Benton Lake National Wildlife Refuge and the Benton Lake Wetland Management District. Location and description The lake is in west-central Montana within both the Benton Lake National Wildlife Refuge and the Benton Lake Wetland Management District. Montana
Montana () is a state in the Mountain West division of the Western United States. Benton Lake National Wildlife Refuge is a National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in the central part of the U.S. state of Montana. Location It lies in northern Cascade County, north of the city of Great Falls, Montana. Benton Lake Wetland Management District
Benton Lake Wetland Management District is located in the U.S. state of Montana and is the largest wetland district in the nation. Covering an area of around Benton Lake, the district extends from the Canada–United States border to Helena, Montana. Within the district are 23 Waterfowl Production Areas under conservation easements with local landowners ensuring these areas will not be developed, yet will remain within private ownership. Black Horse Lake
Black Horse Lake is a seasonal lake just north of present-day Great Falls, Montana. The lake is usually dry, except during the spring and early summer. Location Black horse Lake is located approximately 3 miles southeast of Benton Lake National Wildlife Refuge. History This lake was previously a large, year round lake. According to historical records, the nearby Benton Lake, was used by early European settlers in the Great Falls, Montana region, to irrigate farms. A canal or canals were dug to drain Benton Lake for irrigation. The one remaining canal leads from northwest to southeast, directly to Black Horse Lake. The canal abruptly stops about a third of a mile from where Black Horse Lake was situated. Black Horse lake is above sea level while nearby Benton Lake is above sea level. Anatinae
The Anatinae are a subfamily of the family Anatidae (swans, geese and ducks). Its surviving members are the dabbling ducks, which feed mainly at the surface rather than by diving. The other members of the Anatinae are the extinct moa-nalo, a young but highly apomorphic lineage derived from the dabbling ducks. There has been much debate about the systematical status and which ducks belong to the Anatinae. Some taxonomic authorities only include the dabbling ducks and their close relatives, the extinct moa-nalos.
