Bent Mountain is an unincorporated community in Roanoke County, Virginia, United States. Bent Mountain is located on U.S. Route 221 southwest of Roanoke. The community of Bent Mountain sits, as the name implies, on top of the large and fertile Bent Mountain Plateau. The Newtown Pippin, also known as Albemarle Pippin, is an American apple that originated in the late 17th or early 18th century and is still cultivated on a small scale. At one time, there were two very similar apple cultivars known as the 'Yellow Newtown' ('Albermarle Pippin') and 'Green Newtown' ('Brooke Pippin'), one of which perhaps originated as a sport of the other. Trader's Path
The Trader's Path was a colonial highway through southwestern Virginia, established in 1740. The Trader's Path was an early road from Augusta County, Virginia, now part of US 460 and US 220 Alternate. Established in 1740, the Trader's Path led from Lynchburg, Virginia to Big Lick, Virginia (now known as Roanoke, Virginia), and was used to bring settlers and traders from central Virginia into the Roanoke Valley. Twelve O'clock Knob (Roanoke County, Virginia)
Twelve O'clock Knob is a mountain located in southwestern Roanoke County, Virginia, directly south of Salem, Virginia. According to local lore, enslaved people in the western Roanoke Valley noted that the Sun was directly over the mountain roughly around noon local time. In 1995 and 1996, the Tour DuPont staged a time trial in the Roanoke Valley, the highlight of which was a ride over the steep, winding Twelve O'clock Knob Road. Floyd County High School
History Floyd County High School was built in 1962, a product of a county-wide movement to consolidate the three high schools in Floyd County using funding from both the federal government and the Commonwealth of Virginia. Originally, there were separate high schools in Willis, Floyd, and Check. Floyd County High School was previously located on the current site of Floyd Elementary School. Before that, it was located in the building which now houses Schoolhouse Fabrics. The first class of FCHS graduated in 1963.
