Benson And Hedges Fashion Design Awards
Benson & Hedges Fashion Design Awards was a New Zealand fashion competition that ran from 1964 to 1998. It was the country's major competitive fashion event during this period. The Awards' open entry format offered an opportunity for new fashion designers and manufacturers to showcase their work on a national platform. Prominent New Zealand fashion designers showcased their works at this event including Annie Bonza, Trish Gregory, Denise L'Estrange-Corbet and Isabelle Harris. History The first awards ceremony was held on 29 July 1964 during Wellington's Majestic Cabaret. It was originally called the Wills Gold Rose Awards but became the Benson and Hedges Fashion Design Awards after a change in sponsor. Annie Bonza
Annie Bonza (née Cole, born 17 March 1940) is a New Zealand fashion designer and a pioneer of boutique fashion. Her signature 'doodle' style consists of braiding, ribbon, beading, embroidery and hand painting clothing with Māori and Polynesia influences. Her work has been exhibited at Te Papa and has won awards at the Benson & Hedges Fashion Design Awards in 1971 and 1989. Early life Annie Bonza was born Annie Cole in Te Kūiti, New Zealand. At age 16, she moved to Auckland where she began a cutting and design apprenticeship at Chadwick and Bray, a large clothing manufacturer. In her time there she was exposed to pre-war patterns of Corneli lace which would go on to inspire her later work. Trish Gregory
Trish Gregory is a New Zealand fashion designer and businesswoman, who achieved widespread recognition as one of New Zealand's leading and innovative designers in a career spanning half a century. Early life Gregory was born Patricia Pearl Lattimer in New Plymouth, New Zealand, and educated at New Plymouth Girls' High School. Career After travelling internationally for several years working as a secretary and architectural draftswoman, Gregory returned to New Zealand joining the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation (NZBC) as a copywriter. Denise L'Estrange-Corbet
Dame Denise Ann L'Estrange-Corbet (born ) is a New Zealand fashion designer and businesswoman. She founded WORLD, a fashion label, in 1989 with her then husband, Francis Hooper. Personal life L'Estrange-Corbet published her autobiography, ''All That Glitters'', in 2008, in which she discussed her childhood in London and her history of depression. At the age of 3 her mother took her and her sister to England to escape an abusive alcoholic father, and she was raised in London. She appeared in a Ministry of Health (New Zealand), Ministry of Health campaign aimed at reducing the stigma of suffering from depression. Graham Kerr (born 22 January 1934) is an English cooking personality who is best known for his television cooking show ''The Galloping Gourmet'' from December 30, 1968 to September 14, 1973. Early life Kerr was born in Brondesbury, London. His Scottish parents were established hoteliers. As a result, much of his childhood was spent among European chefs. Maysie Bestall-Cohen (born 1945) is a New Zealand retired model and modelling agent and the former organiser and presenter of the Benson & Hedges Fashion Design Awards. Early life Bestall-Cohen grew up in Dublin, Ireland, where her father was a children’s clothing manufacturer. When she was 16, the family moved to New Zealand and settled in Auckland. She attended secretarial college there, and was invited to join a modelling agency by two women she met a party, Winsome Goudie and Mary Bourne. New Zealand Fashion Museum
The New Zealand Fashion Museum is a virtual fashion museum in New Zealand established in 2010. It was the brainchild of fashion designer and fashion historian Doris de Pont. Established as a charitable trust in January 2010, the museum holds "pop-up" exhibitions around New Zealand and runs as an online museum. It draws from public and private collections to pull together its exhibitions, featuring designers such as Liz Findlay and Margi Robertson. The museum's first pop-up exhibition, ''Looking Terrific – the Story of El Jay'', was curated by Doris de Pont.
