Benny Johnson (American Football)
Benny L. Johnson (June 29, 1948 – August 10, 1988) was an American football defensive back who played five seasons in the National Football League (NFL) with the Houston Oilers and New Orleans Saints. He was drafted by the Houston Oilers in the sixth round of the 1970 NFL Draft. Johnson played college football at Johnson C. Smith University and attended Jones High School (Orlando, Florida), Jones High School in Orlando, Florida. He was also a member of the Philadelphia Bell of the World Football League. In gridiron football, defensive backs (DBs), also called the secondary, are the players on the defensive side of the ball who play farthest back from the line of scrimmage. They are distinguished from the other two sets of defensive players, the defensive linemen who play directly on the line of scrimmage, and the linebackers, who play in the middle of the defense, between the defensive line and the defensive backs. Among the defensive backs, there are two main types, cornerbacks, which play nearer the line of scrimmage and the sideline, whose main role is to cover the opposing team's wide receivers, and the Safety (gridiron football position), safeties, who play further back near the center of the field, and who act as the last line of defense. World Football League
The World Football League (WFL) was an American football league that played one full season in 1974 and most of its second in 1975. Although the league's proclaimed ambition was to bring American football onto a worldwide stage, the farthest the WFL reached was placing a team – the Hawaiians – in Honolulu, Hawaii. The league folded midway through its second season, in 1975. A new minor football league began play as the World Football League in 2008 after acquiring the rights to its trademarks and intellectual property; it folded in 2011.
