Bennett Smith (shipbuilder)
Bennett Smith (November 29, 1808January 11, 1886) was a shipbuilder and shipowner in Nova Scotia, Canada. Smith briefly served as a member of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly for Hants County in 1858 and 1859 as a Liberal member. He was born in Windsor, Nova Scotia, the son of John Smith and Ann Grant. He learned the craft of shipbuilding from his father, and he and his brothers inherited their father's shipyard, located on Smith's Island at the intersection of the Avon and St. Croix Rivers, in 1832. In the same year, Smith married Rachel Harris. During the early 1840s, Smith was involved in farming and the timber trade but returned again to shipbuilding. He built 27 large ships involved in foreign trade, owning and operating all but one; he also owned shares in other vessels. He was elected to the provincial assembly in 1858 following the death of Ichabod Dimock; he did not run for reelection in the general election the following year. Windsor is a community located in Hants County, Nova Scotia, Canada. It is a service centre for the western part of the county and is situated on Highway 101. The community has a history dating back to its use by the Mi'kmaq Nation for several millennia prior to European colonization. When the Acadians lived in the area, the town was raided by New England forces in 1704. Ichabod Dimock
Ichabod Dimock (died June 16, 1858) was a farmer, magistrate and political figure in Nova Scotia. He represented Newport township from 1840 to 1855 and Hants County from 1855 to 1858 in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly as a Reformer. Ichabod was the son of Shubael Dimock and Susan Macumber and the grandson of the Reverend Shubael Dimock. In 1803, Dimock married Sarah Smith. Black Watch (full Rigged Ship)
''Black Watch'' was a large full-rigged ship built by Windsor shipbuilder Bennett Smith (shipbuilder), Bennett Smith in Windsor, Nova Scotia. It was the last ship built by Smith in Windsor. Construction Bennett Smith was the foremost owner, designer and master shipbuilder in Windsor. He ran a shipyard inherited from his father on Smith's Island, at the intersection of the Avon River, Nova Scotia, Avon and St. Croix River (Nova Scotia), St. Croix Rivers. With his brothers he built 27 ships in Windsor, the final one being the full-rigged, 1318-ton ''Black Watch''. The ship cost $50,000.00 to construct and was launched in May 1877 to great fanfare. Upon completion of ''Black Watch'', Smith closed his shipyard, reportedly over a wage dispute with his employees. Old Parish Burying Ground (Windsor, Nova Scotia)
The Old Parish Burying Ground is the oldest protestant cemetery in Windsor, Nova Scotia and one of the oldest in Canada. The graveyard was located adjacent to the first protestant church in Windsor (1788). The oldest marker of Rachel Kelley is dated 1771, twelve years after the New England Planters began to settle the area. In 1776, the Honourable Michael Francklin gave about two acres of land for erecting a Church, and for a “Burying Ground”. The Burying Ground was the site of the first two churches in Windsor. The first, which according to Hind was sixty feet square, was built in 1771. Rev. Joseph Bennett, the rector of this chapel appointed in 1775, was buried in the Old Parish Burying Ground in 1795.
