Bennett & Fisher, Limited was a South Australian business, for many years one of Australia's major live stock salesmen, wool and produce brokers, and land and insurance agents. History Stock and cattle salesman and auctioneer Gabriel Bennett and accountant Benjamin Fisher went into partnership in July 1889, in Bennett's office in Currie Street, Adelaide. Fisher retired from active involvement with the business c. 1910. Soon they had outgrown their offices and moved to Bowman Buildings, King William Street. By 1919 Bennett & Fisher had the lion's share of cattle, lamb and calf sales at the Metropolitan Abattoirs Market. Bennett & Fisher Limited was founded early that year to take over the assets of Bennett & Fisher and Cheadle, Crase & Co., wool and hide brokers. Goldsbrough Mort & Co was an Australian agricultural business. History In 1843 Thomas Sutcliffe Mort established a business which operated as auctioneers and brokers in the wool trade. The business took on partners and become known as Mort & Co. In 1847, Richard Goldsbrough founded a wool broking business in Melbourne. Gabriel Bennett (23 December 1817 – 13 September 1895) was an auctioneer, stock and cattle salesman and horse breeder in South Australia. He was a founder of the stock and station agents Bennett and Fisher. History Bennett was born in London, a son of Solomon Bennett (c. 1795 – 11 January 1864) of 5 Slaverton Row, Walworth Road, London. and married in 1846. In 1853 he emigrated to Melbourne, and the following year arrived in Adelaide and opened a butcher's shop in Currie Street then in 1857 moved to Hindley Street, then in 1863 moved into the wholesale meat trade. John Lazar was an employee. In 1865, he joined E. M. Bagot, a fellow-member of the South Australian Jockey Club committee, as partners in Bennett & Bagot, station and livestock agents, with offices in Clarke's buildings, Hindley Street, and afterwards in Gresham Street.
