Benjamin J. Lea
Benjamin J. Lea (January 1, 1833 – March 15, 1894) was an American lawyer and politician, who served as a justice on the Tennessee Supreme Court from 1876 to 1878, and again from 1890 to 1894. Born in Caswell County, North Carolina, Lea graduated from Wake Forest College in 1852, and moved to Tennessee, where he taught between 1852 and 1856 as a teacher in Haywood County. He studied law to be admitted to the bar in 1856, and became a lawyer in Brownsville, Tennessee. At the same time he made a political career as a member of the Democratic Party. He was elected to represent Haywood County in the Tennessee legislature in 1859, serving until 1821. He then served in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War, achieving the rank of colonel. In 1865, shortly before the end of the war he was taken prisoner. Tennessee Supreme Court
The Tennessee Supreme Court is the ultimate judicial tribunal of the state of Tennessee. Roger A. Page is the Chief Justice. Unlike other states, in which the state attorney general is directly elected or appointed by the governor or state legislature, the Tennessee Supreme Court appoints the Tennessee Attorney General. Structure The Tennessee State Constitution, adopted in 1870, calls for five justices, no more than two of whom may come from any one of the state's three Grand Divisions (East Tennessee, Middle Tennessee, and West Tennessee) in order to prevent regional bias. For the same purpose, the court is required to convene alternately in Knoxville, Nashville, and Jackson. In recent years this provision has been regarded as permissive rather than restrictive. Joseph Brown Heiskell
Joseph Brown Heiskell (November 5, 1823 – March 7, 1913) was a prominent Tennessee politician who served in the Confederate States Congress during the American Civil War. Biography Heiskell was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, the son of newspaper publisher Frederick Heiskell, Frederick S. Heiskell (1786–1882) and Eliza (Brown) Heiskell. He served in the Tennessee State Senate during the 32nd General Assembly from 1857 to 1859, representing Hancock County, Tennessee, Hancock, Hawkins County, Tennessee, Hawkins, and Jefferson County, Tennessee, Jefferson counties as a member of the Whig Party (United States), Whig Party. Following the state's ordinance of secession and the outbreak of the Civil War, he represented Tennessee in the First Confederate Congress and the Second Confederate Congress from 1862 to 1864. William Frierson Cooper
William Frierson Cooper (March 11, 1820 – May 7, 1909) was a lawyer, planter and politician. He was nominated to the Supreme Court of the Confederate States of America by President Jefferson Davis, but the court never sat because of the American Civil War. After the war, he served as the Dean of the Vanderbilt University Law School from 1874 to 1875. He was a judge of the Tennessee Supreme Court from 1878 to 1886. Early life Cooper was born on March 11, 1820 in Franklin, Tennessee. His father, Matthew D. Cooper, was a merchant who later became a banker in Columbia, Tennessee. His mother was Mary Agnes Frierson. His paternal grandfather, Robert Cooper, served in the American Revolutionary War.
