Benjamin Hart (businessman)
Benjamin Hart (August 10, 1779 – February 27, 1855) was a Canadian businessman, militia officer, and justice of the peace. Biography Early life Benjamin Hart was born in Montreal to Aaron Hart, a prominent merchant of Trois-Rivières, and Dorothea Judah. Benjamin was educated in New York and Philadelphia and by 1798 had returned to Trois-Rivières to assist with the family's extensive business. When Aaron died in 1800, Benjamin inherited the family's main store in Trois-Rivières and their Montreal house. In 1806, he married Harriot Judith Hart, daughter of stockbroker Ephraim Hart. They had numerous children. He supported the cause of Jewish civil liberties, and supported his brother Ezekiel in his thwarted political career. He helped push for a law, passed in 1831, that granted equality of civil liberties to Jews. He was an active member of Montreal's Jewish congregation. Montreal Annexation Manifesto
The Montreal Annexation Manifesto was a political document dated September 14, 1849, and signed in Montreal, Canada East, calling for the Province of Canada's annexation by the United States. The manifesto was published in two versions (October 11, 1849, and December 1849) by the ''Annexation Association'', an alliance of 325 Montreal businessmen. Most of these were English-speaking Tories, who were opposed to Britain's abolition of the Corn Laws, which ended preferential colonial trade, and by its consent to the Rebellion Losses Bill, and French Canadian nationalists (including Louis-Joseph Papineau) who supported the republican system of government in the United States. These businessmen believed that so long as Canada was under British rule, it would be subjected to the interests of elements of Britain's aristocracy and businessmen. Hart Family
The Hart wrestling family, sometimes known as the Hart dynasty, is a mainly Canadian family with a significant history within professional wrestling. The patriarch of the family was wrestling legend Stu Hart (1915–2003). An amateur and professional wrestling performer, promoter and trainer, Stu owned and operated his own wrestling promotion, Stampede Wrestling. He also trained some of the most well known stars in wrestling history including Superstar Billy Graham, Fritz Von Erich, Edge, Chris Jericho, Chris Benoit, Christian and his sons Bret Hart and Owen Hart. Dictionary Of Canadian Biography
The ''Dictionary of Canadian Biography'' (''DCB''; french: Dictionnaire biographique du Canada) is a dictionary of biographical entries for individuals who have contributed to the history of Canada. The ''DCB'', which was initiated in 1959, is a collaboration between the University of Toronto and Laval University.
