Benington, Hertfordshire
Benington is a village and civil parish in the East Hertfordshire district of Hertfordshire, England, about four miles east of Stevenage and 35 miles north of London. History There are two theories regarding the naming of the village. One comes from Saxon times and is derived from the name of the river to the west of the village - the Beane. The middle syllable 'ing' is common in place names all over south-east England and means 'people', Benington therefore meaning ''The Town of the Beane Folk''. The second view is that Benington is a corruption of the name 'Belinton' which appears in the Domesday Book. This is thought to mean the town of Bela's people, after the name of the man who led the first group of immigrants to the area. Population According to the 2001 census it had a population of 922. Benington, Lincolnshire
Benington is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Boston in Lincolnshire, England, and approximately east of Boston, and on the A52 road. The parish contains the hamlets of Benington Sea End and West End. Nearby villages are Butterwick and Leverton. Benington parish has a population of 569, increasing to 580 at the 2011 Census. It is one of eighteen parishes which, together with Boston, form the borough. Local government has been arranged in this way since the reorganisation of 1 April 1974, which resulted from the Local Government Act 1972. The parish forms part of the Coastal electoral ward. Hitherto, the parish had formed part of Boston Rural District, in the Parts of Holland. Holland was one of the three divisions (formally known as ''parts'') of the traditional county of Lincolnshire. John Benington
John E. Benington (December 31, 1921 – September 10, 1969) was an American college basketball coach. The picture listed of John Benington is incorrect. It is not him. This is from his grand-daughter. The Findlay, Ohio native played college basketball for two seasons at the University of San Francisco, where he captained the squad that won the 1949 National Invitation Tournament under Pete Newell. He then became assistant basketball coach at Michigan State University (1950–1956) under Newell and Forddy Anderson. He served a combined 14 seasons as head men's basketball coach at Drake University (1956–1958), St. Louis University (1958–1965) and Michigan State (1965–1969). He led Saint Louis to four NIT appearances including the finals of the 1961 NIT where they lost to Providence. Benington died of a massive heart attack at age 47 after jogging. Walter Benington
Walter Benington (1872–1936) was a British photographer. Working in the Victorian era and the first half of the twentieth century, his important contribution to early twentieth century photography has been more fully recognised in the doctoral thesis of Robert Crow. Biography Walter Benington (sometimes spelt as Bennington) was born in 1872 in Stockton on Tees, in County Durham. He was the son of George and Helena Benington. The 1881 census shows his father's occupation as a Tea Dealer. Benington married Kathleen Inez Whitwell (d. 1953) in 1905. The 1911 Census reveals that the couple had a son, Anthony, and a daughter Barbara. Benington's occupation is described as Photographer and his place of residence to be in Southgate in north London.
