Benin At The 2016 Summer Olympics
Benin competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 to 21 August 2016. This was the nation's eleventh appearance at the Summer Olympics, with the exception of the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal because of the African boycott. Benin National Olympic and Sports Committee selected a team of six athletes, four men and two women, for the Games, competing in athletics, fencing, judo, and swimming. All of them made their maiden Olympic appearance, with sabre fencer Yémi Apithy leading the Benin team as the nation's flag bearer in the opening ceremony. Benin, however, has yet to win its first Olympic medal. Maximilian Hartung (born 8 October 1989) is a German right-handed sabre fencer, two-time team European champion, two-time individual European champion, 2014 team world champion, and two-time Olympian. Hartung is chairman of the Athletes Commission of the German Olympic Sports Confederation and the founding president of Athleten Deutschland e.V. Laraïba Seibou (born 6 December 2000) is a Beninese swimmer. At 15 years old, she was chosen as one of Benin's wild card entries for the 2016 Summer Olympics and competed in the 50 metre freestyle. Although she came second in her heat with a time of 33.01 seconds, her recorded time meant that she did not advance to the semi-finals.
