Bengeo is a suburb and former village and civil parish on the northwest edge of the county town of Hertford in Hertfordshire, England. It is an electoral ward of Hertford. In 1891 the parish had a population of 2586. In 1894 the parish was abolished to form Bengeo Rural and Bengeo Urban. Toponym Bengeo is on a rise between the River Beane and River Rib overlooking Hartham Common. Its toponym is derived from an Old English name meaning spur or ridge over the River Beane. The Domesday Book of 1086 records it as ''Belingehou''. It evolved through forms including ''Beneggho'' and ''Beningho'' in the 13th century, ''Bengeho'' in the 15th century and ''Benjow'' in the 16th century before reaching its current form. St Leonard's Church, Bengeo
The Church of Saint Leonard is a Norman church in Bengeo, Hertfordshire, England. Located on the hillside overlooking the shared Beane and Lea valley, the Grade I Listed church dates from about 1120, and is the oldest building in Hertford. History The building served as the parish church of Bengeo until the larger Holy Trinity Church was opened in 1855, after which St Leonard's was stripped of its fittings and stood empty and unused for some years. The Gosselin family of nearby Bengeo Hall commissioned John Thomas Micklethwaite to restore and refit the church between 1884 and 1894. Architecture The church is built of flint with stone dressings and has a tiled roof. The wooden west bellcote dates from the 19th-century restoration. The bellcote houses a single bell, dated 1636. The south doorway dates from the 12th century, with the addition of a Georgian brick porch. The south door itself dates from the 14th century. Hertford
Hertford ( ) is the county town of Hertfordshire, England, and is also a civil parish in the East Hertfordshire district of the county. The parish had a population of 26,783 at the 2011 census. The town grew around a ford on the River Lea, near its confluences with the rivers Mimram, Beane, and Rib. The Lea is navigable from the Thames up to Hertford. Fortified settlements were established on each side of the ford at Hertford in 913AD. The county of Hertfordshire was established at a similar time, being named after and administered from Hertford. Bengeo Rural is a civil parish in the East Hertfordshire district of Hertfordshire, England. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 601, increasing at the 2011 Census to 644. The parish includes the villages of Tonwell and Chapmore End. River Rib
The River Rib originates near the East Hertfordshire village of Therfield and runs parallel with the A10 through Chipping, Wyddial, Buntingford, Westmill, Braughing, Puckeridge and Standon, before dividing the villages of Thundridge and Wadesmill and continuing until it reaches its confluence with the River Lea near Hertford. History The River Rib was used to power an overshot watermill at Ware Park between Hertford and Ware. East Hertfordshire is a local government district in Hertfordshire, England. Its council is based in Hertford, the county town of Hertfordshire. Hartham Common
Hartham Common is a park in the county of Hertfordshire in the East of England. It is located between the town centre of the county town of Hertford and the elevated suburb of Bengeo. Location The park is situated in the valley of the River Lea and the River Beane, where the rivers' confluence is, at the eastern edge of the main field. The River Rib enters further east of the main field. Facilities Hartham Common is very sports-orientated, with many different sports being practiced in the area. A selection includes football, rugby, tennis, fishing, bowls, kayaking and canoeing. A full gym and swimming pool is located on the edge of the park next to Kallum Weir. A large fenced children's play area provides a place for parents to take their young children, and an adjacent skatepark is available as well as a separate designated play area for older children.
