Benedetta Rosmunda Pisaroni
Benedetta Rosmunda Pisaroni (born Piacenza, 16 May 1793 – died Piacenza, 6 August 1872) was an Italian soprano who later became a contralto. She was born as Benedetta Pisaroni to Giambattista Pisaroni and Luigia Pratti. Active on the operatic stage from 1811 to 1831, she suffered from smallpox in the early years of her career which caused a change (downward) in her extended vocal range. Appearing in Bergamo, Padua, Bologna, Venice, Milan, Rome and eventually Paris in the 1810s and 1820s, she was closely associated with the operas of Gioachino Rossini and Giacomo Meyerbeer. (''The Exile of Granada'') is a ''melodramma serio'' (serious opera) in two acts by Giacomo Meyerbeer. The Italian libretto was by Felice Romani based on the rivalries between the Zegridi and the Abenceraggi factions in the last days of the kingdom of Granada. It is the fifth of Meyerbeer's Italian operas but had only three confirmed stagings in the 19th century. The world premiere took place at La Scala, Milan, on 12 March, 1822. Background Born in Berlin to a wealthy family, as a young man Giacomo Meyerbeer had musical ambitions and studied and traveled in Italy. It is the largest work on opera in English, and in its printed form, amounts to 5,448 pages in four volumes. Elizabeth Forbes (3 August 1924 – 22 October 2014) was an English author, music critic, and musicologist who specialised in writing about opera. Her main areas of interest were 19th- and 20th-century opera (French and Scandinavian in particular) and singers, both historical and present-day. She contributed many reviews and articles to several notable periodicals and newspapers internationally including the ''Financial Times'' (which she joined in the early 1970s, working with Andrew Porter and then Ronald Crichton), ''The Independent'', ''The Musical Times'', ''Opera'', ''Opera Canada'' and ''Opera News'' among several others. ''Ermione'' (1819) is a tragic opera (azione tragica) in two acts by Gioachino Rossini to an Italian libretto by Andrea Leone Tottola, based on the play ''Andromaque'' by Jean Racine.
