Franz Bendel
Franz Bendel (23 March 18333 July 1874) was a German Bohemian pianist, composer, and teacher. Bendel was born in Schönlinde, Bohemia, Austrian Empire. He was a student of Franz Liszt for five years in Weimar. From 1862, he lived in Berlin and taught at Theodor Kullak's Music Academy, Neue Akademie der Tonkunst. He was also the author of over four hundred compositions, many of them for the piano, including one piano concerto. Bendel was a superb pianist who toured extensively until his death from typhoid fever in Boston while on an American tour. He was aged 41. Life Franz Bendel was a son of an elementary school teacher. After the first instruction from his father, he became a student of Josef Proksch. Through his teacher, who encouraged him very much, Bendel later went to Franz Liszt in Weimar, where he also met Wendelin Weißheimer. Graham Bendel is a British writer and filmmaker. He has written for '' The Big Issue'', ''New Statesman'', '' Hotdog'' and ''Prospect''. In 2005, he directed the documentary ''Billy Childish Is Dead'', which was nominated for a British Independent Film Award and has been shown in Oslo, Montreal, Croatia, London and New York. Hans Bendel
Hans Sigmund Bendel (18 October 1814 – 28 November 1853) was a Swiss painter and illustrator. Life Hans Bendel, of Schaffhausen, in Switzerland, was an historical painter and lithographer, and attended the Academy of Munich, under Kaulbach. The son of a master tailor, Bendel completed an apprenticeship as a painter. During his travels as a youth, he visited Munich where he found work as a craftsman at the Munich Residenz while he improved his painting. He befriended Wilhelm von Kaulbach who helped Bendel continue his education at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich. From October 1838 until May 1839 he practiced painting and studied the classics in Rome with his teacher. Bendel worked as a successful book illustrator and historical painter. Henri Bendel, Inc. (pronounced BEN-del), established in 1895, was a women's department store based in New York City which in its later history sold women's handbags, jewelry, luxury fashion accessories, home fragrances and gifts. Its New York City store was located at 10 West 57th street. In 1985, when purchased by Limited, the new owner moved the store to 712 Fifth Avenue. Henri Bendel was the first retailer to have its own fragrance, to offer in-store makeovers, and to stage its own fashion show. The retailer is credited with developing the concession, or shop-within-a-shop merchandising concept that is in use in some department stores today. In the Cole Porter song from 1934 "You're the Top" made famous by Ethel Merman, Porter incorporates the line "You're a Bendel Bonnet / a Shakespeare Sonnet", immortalising the brand.
