Benjamin White (Maine Politician)
Benjamin White (May 13, 1790 – June 7, 1860) was a U.S. Representative from Maine. Born in Goshen, Massachusetts (now Vienna, Maine), White attended the common schools. He moved to Winthrop, in 1802 and was employed on a farm until 1808 when he entered Farmington Academy. He taught school for several years. During the War of 1812, he was in Augusta, and assisted in raising troops, later serving as a noncommissioned officer with troops stationed at Castine and Eastport. He again engaged in teaching in Montville, Maine, until 1821, when he also engaged in the sawmill business and agricultural pursuits. He served as town selectman. He served as member of the Maine House of Representatives in 1829, 1841, and 1842. White was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-eighth Congress (March 4, 1843 – March 3, 1845). Benjamin White or Ben White (c. 1725 – March 9, 1794) was a successful Fleet Street publisher. He was the first publisher to specialise in books on Natural History including ''The Natural History of Selborne'' which was written by his brother, Gilbert White. Life Benjamin White was the third surviving son of John White (1688 - 1758), a barrister, and his wife Anne (born Holt). The White family lived at ''The Wakes'' the family home in Selborne which was to become a memorial to the White family. Ben attended school at Bishop's Waltham and he went to London to join the publishing business. Benjamin Franklin White (September 20, 1800 – December 5, 1879) was a shape note " singing master", and compiler of the shape note tunebook known as ''The Sacred Harp''. He was born near Cross Keys in Union County, South Carolina, the twelfth child of Robert and Mildred White. Musical career White and Elisha J. King published ''The Sacred Harp'' in 1844, using the four-shape shape note notation. King died in 1844. In 1845, White led in the establishment of the ''Southern Musical Convention''. In 1850, he issued a second edition of ''The Sacred Harp'', adding 97 songs and 103 pages. With the 1850 and future editions, White was assisted by a musical committee appointed by the Southern Musical Convention. In 1859, a third edition of ''The Sacred Harp'' was released, adding 74 more songs on 63 pages. A fourth edition came out in 1869. Eileen Simpson and Ben White (both born 1977) are British artists who frequently collaborate. Together, they are known for their work with copyright issues, audio and experimental film. Work Simpson and White were both born in 1977, in Manchester. Simpson has a BA in Fine Art from Goldsmiths, London, and an MA in Film and Visual Media from Birkbeck, University of London. With White, Simpson initiated the Open Music Archive, which is a platform for collecting and digitizing audio recordings which are no longer copyrighted. In 2008, Simpson and White toured the UK to advocate for the establishment of a country-wide "creative commons" for artists' use.
