Ben Shemen Forest
Ben Shemen Forest is the largest forest in central Israel and one of the largest in the entire country, covering an area of 22,000 dunams (22 Km²). In the forest there are picnic spots, hiking and bicycle routes. It is located on both sides of Route 443, between the Ben Shemen Interchange and the city of Modi'in-Maccabim-Re'ut. Route 443 (Israel–Palestine)
Route 443 ( he, כביש 443, מעלה בית חורון) is also known as Ma'ale Beit Horon ( Bethoron Ascent), following the ancient east-west trade route connecting the Via Maris and the Way of the Patriarchs. It is the main highway connecting Tel Aviv and Gush Dan with Jerusalem via Modi'in. While technically listed as a regional road, it is, for the most part, a divided, four-lane highway which utilizes some grade separation and interchanges, as well as major at-grade intersections, and thus is not classified as a motorway, even though there is a short motorway section on its western end, connecting it to westbound Highway 1. Ben Shemen Interchange ( he, מחלף בן שמן) is a major freeway interchange complex in central Israel, connecting Highway 1, Highway 6, Route 443 and Route 444, as well as several local roads. The interchange is located near moshav Ben Shemen and Ben Shemen Forest, hence its name. It is one of the largest and most complex interchanges in the country. History The interchange first opened as a simple diamond interchange between Highway 1 and Route 443 in 1981. It was improved in 1996 with the addition of two Y interchanges, providing a direct connection between Highway 1 and eastbound Route 443 and creating a short freeway branch off Route 443.
