Ben Heard
Benjamin "Ben" Heard is a South Australian environmental consultant and an advocate for nuclear power in Australia, through his directorship of environmental NGO, Bright New World. Career Heard completed a Bachelor of Applied Science, Occupational Therapy from the University of South Australia and a Masters of Corporate Environmental and Sustainability Management from Monash University. As of February 2015, he is a PhD candidate at the University of Adelaide. Heard worked as a Senior Consultant for GHD (2006-2008) and Senior Consultant in Sustainability and Climate Change at AECOM (2007-2009). He launched his own consultancy in 2009, ThinkClimate Consulting, which wound up in November 2016. He was the founder and chief author of the blog, Decarbonise SA. Nuclear Power In Australia
The prospect of nuclear power in Australia has been a topic of public debate since the 1950s. Australia has one nuclear plant in Lucas Heights, Sydney, but is not used to produce nuclear power, but instead is used to produce medical radioisotopes. Northern Power Station (South Australia)
Northern Power Station was located at Port Paterson in the Australian state of South Australia about south of the city centre of Port Augusta. It was coal powered with two 260 MW steam turbines that generated a total of 520 MW of electricity. It was operated and maintained by Alinta Energy and was commissioned in 1985. Northern received coal by rail from the Leigh Creek Coal Mine, 280 km to the north. The plant ceased electricity production in May 2016 and decommissioned and demolished over the following few years. Emissions Air Carbon Monitoring for Action estimated that this power station emitted 3.62 million tonnes of greenhouse gases each year as a result of burning coal. The Sydney Institute
The Sydney Institute is a privately funded Australian policy forum founded in 1989. The institute took over the resources of the Sydney Institute of Public Affairs which ceased activity in the late 1980s. The institute was opened on 23 August 1989 by then New South Wales Premier Nick Greiner with supporting remarks from Bob Carr (then NSW Opposition Leader). Columnist and writer Gerard Henderson is the executive director of the institute. His wife, Anne Henderson, who is also an author, is the deputy director. Sean Edwards (politician)
Sean Christopher Edwards (born 2 January 1962) is an Australian politician who was a member of the Australian Senate for South Australia from 2011 to 2016, representing the Liberal Party. Early career Edwards was an auctioneer, land and estate agent from 1980 to 1996. From 1996 he was a vigneron and winemaker in the Clare Valley wine region of South Australia. He and his direct family have significant private vineyard holdings in Clare and the Adelaide Hills, and he is a director of Kirribilly Wines. Nuclear Fuel Cycle Royal Commission
The Nuclear Fuel Cycle Royal Commission is a Royal Commission into South Australia's future role in the nuclear fuel cycle. It commenced on 19 March 2015 and delivered its final report to the Government of South Australia on 6 May 2016. The Commissioner was former Governor of South Australia, Kevin Scarce, a retired Royal Australian Navy Rear-Admiral and chancellor of the University of Adelaide. The Commission concluded that nuclear power was unlikely to be economically feasible in Australia for the foreseeable future. Economic Development Board (South Australia)
The Economic Development Board was an independent advisory body to the Government of South Australia focused on economic development issues in South Australia. It was established by the Rann Government in 2002 and concluded with the first budget of the Marshall Government in 2018. History The EDB spanned the terms of two Labor Premiers, Rann (2002-2011) and Weatherill (2011-2017). It was formed by then-premier Mike Rann to improve SA's business outlook, and was considered to be the state’s "highest-powered" advisory group.
