Ben Hay Martindale
Ben Hay Martindale C.B. (1 October 1824 – 26 May 1904) was a British public servant who acted in several managerial positions in the young colony of New South Wales, where he was known as "Captain Martindale". History Martindale was born in London, son of Benjamin Martindale, of Martindale, Westmorland. He was educated at Rugby School and the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, then in 1843 received a commission as second lieutenant with the Royal Engineers at Chatham Dockyard, later at Woolwich. Other postings followed, culminating in 1856 with his appointment as captain under the Inspector-general of Fortifications, London. Appointed by Governor Denison, on 22 July 1857 he replaced Captain Mann as Chief Commissioner of Railways for New South Wales, there being three Commissioners forming the board of control, then after a change in the Government Railways Act he was, on 28 December 1858, appointed sole Commissioner for Railways at the head of an Executive Council. City Of London Electric Lighting Company
The City of London Electric Lighting Company Limited (CLELCo) was a British electricity undertaking. It was formed in July 1891 to generate and supply electricity to the City of London and part of north Southwark. It owned and operated Bankside power station on the south bank of the river Thames. The company provided and stimulated demand for electricity, increased its generating capacity, and competed and co-operated with other electricity undertakings in London. The company was dissolved on 1 April 1948 when the British electricity industry was nationalised. Lithgow Mercury
The ''Lithgow Mercury'', is a tri-weekly English language newspaper first published in 1878 in Lithgow, New South Wales, Australia. History The ''Lithgow Mercury'' was established in 1878. Initially a weekly publication, the paper was published daily from 1949 to 1986, then tri-weekly. In 1879, the paper was purchased by Walter Scott Targett, who had started work as a compositor on the paper, and who was later elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the Member for Hartley. J.P.T. Caulfield acquired the paper in 1886. He worked as editor for eighteen months, until late 1887 when he sold the paper to the proprietors of the ''Lithgow Enterprise and Australian Land Nationaliser''. In January 1889, the Lithgow Mercury Newspaper Co., headed by James Ryan, purchased the business and property of the ''Lithgow Enterprise''. Charles Goodchap
Charles Augustus Goodchap (2 April 1837 – 20 October 1896) was a New South Wales politician. Goodchap was born in Kent, England, and educated at Huntingdon Grammar School. He went to New South Wales in 1853, and obtained a clerkship in the Colonial Secretary's office, from which he was transferred to the Lands and Works Department in 1856, and in 1859 to the Department of Public Works. He became Chief Clerk for Railways in 1870, Secretary for Railways in 1875, and Commissioner for Railways in 1878. Goodchap retired from the Civil Service of New South Wales in 1888. He stood as a Protectionist candidate at the 1889 election for the Legislative Assembly for Redfern and was the fourth candidate elected. He did not contest the following election in 1891 due to business commitments. Goodchap was appointed to the Legislative Council in May 1892 where he remained until his death. John Rae (administrator)
John Rae (9 January 1813 – 15 July 1900) was an Australian administrator, painter and author. Early life John Rae was born at Aberdeen, Scotland, the son of George Rae, banker, and his wife Jane, née Edmond. He was educated at the Aberdeen Grammar School, Marischal College and University of Aberdeen. He graduated Master of Arts in 1832. He studied law and in 1839 went to Australia to take up the position of secretary and accountant to the North British Australasian Loan and Investment Company. Career as an administrator He arrived in Sydney on 8 December 1839. In 1842 he was responsible for the letterpress for Sydney Illustrated, and was appointed town clerk of Sydney on 27 July 1843, the second to occupy that position. At the end of 1853 the Sydney corporation was abolished, and from 1 January 1854 the city was managed by three commissioners, of whom Rae was one. The Most Honourable Order of the Bath is a British order of chivalry founded by George I of Great Britain, George I on 18 May 1725.
