Ben Espy
Ben E. Espy is a Democratic politician who formerly served in the Ohio Senate. A member of Columbus City Council from 1982 to 1992, Espy went on to obtain an appointment to the Ohio Senate after Senator Richard Pfeiffer resigned in 1992. He won election to fill the remainder of the term in 1992, and to a full term in 1994. By 1994, Espy had been chosen to serve as assistant Senate minority leader, and by 1996, he was minority leader. He won a second term in 1998. In 1999, Espy challenged Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman in the Democratic primary for mayor, but lost. He subsequently resigned his minority leader post, and served the remainder of his term in the Senate as a lame duck. Term limited in 2002, he left office and was replaced by Ray Miller. Richard Pfeiffer (Ohio)
Richard "Rick" Pfeiffer, Jr. (born April 12, 1944) is a Democratic politician and a former member of the Ohio Senate. He served as the city attorney of Columbus, Ohio from 2003 to 2017. Life and career Born in Fort Jackson, South Carolina, Pfeiffer was raised in Columbus, Ohio. He is the son of Marie (née Stoll) and Richard Pfeiffer. An attorney, Pfeiffer initially won an open seat in the Senate in 1982, succeeding Republican John Kasich, who won election to the United States Congress. In 1986, Pfeiffer was mentioned as a potential running mate to Richard Celeste. However, the spot ultimately went to Paul Leonard. Pfeiffer subsequently won reelection to the Senate, and again won reelection in 1990. Pfeiffer won election as judge of the Franklin County Environmental Court in 1992, and as a result, resigned from the Senate. He was succeeded by Ben Espy. In politics, a lame duck or outgoing politician is an elected official whose successor has already been elected or will be soon. An outgoing politician is often seen as having less influence with other politicians due to their limited time left in office. Conversely, a lame duck is free to make decisions that exercise the standard powers with little fear of consequence, such as issuing executive orders, pardons, or other controversial edicts. Lame duck politicians result from term limits, planned retirement, or electoral losses, and are especially noticeable where political systems build in a delay between the announcement of results and the taking of office by election winners. ''The Columbus Dispatch'' is a daily newspaper based in Columbus, Ohio. Its first issue was published on July 1, 1871, and it has been the only mainstream daily newspaper in the city since ''The Columbus Citizen-Journal'' ceased publication in 1985. As of November 2019, Alan D. Miller is the newspaper's interim general manager. History The paper was founded in June 1871 by a group of 10 printers with 900 in financial capital. The paper published its first issue as ''The Daily Dispatch'' on July 1, 1871, as a four-page paper which cost 4¢ (¢ in ) per copy. The paper was originally an afternoon paper for the city of Columbus, Ohio, which at the time had a population of 32,000. Marc Dann
Marc Dann (born March 12, 1962) is an American former politician of the Democratic Party, who served as the Attorney General of Ohio from 2007 until his resignation on May 14, 2008. Law career and state Senate Dann earned a B.A. in 1984 from the University of Michigan and a J.D. degree in 1987 from Case Western Reserve University. He practiced law in Youngstown, Ohio, and became active in Democratic Party politics. Dann ran for the Ohio state Senate in the district then comprising Trumbull and Geauga counties. He finished third in the party primary behind eventual winner Tim Ryan and a local township trustee. From 2001 to 2002, Dann served as a member of the Liberty Local School District board of education.
