Fons Bemelmans
Alphons William Bernhard Johannes (Fons) Bemelmans (born 8 January 1938, in Maastricht) is a Dutch artist, best known as sculptor. He also works as goldsmith, painter, graphic artist and medal artist. Bemelmans began his training as goldsmith in 1955 at the Stadsacademie voor Toegepaste Kunsten in Maastricht, where in 1958 he St. Luke Price won. From 1960 to 1962 he went to study with Professor Ludwig Gies in Cologne at the ''Kölner Werkschulen'' and afterwards with the Italian sculptor Luciano Minguzzi at the ''Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera'' in Milan until 1963. His work can be described as abstracted figurative with the classic theme of myths and legends caught in dreamy yet powerful shapes. Fons Bemelmans lives and works in Eijsden. Ludwig Bemelmans
Ludwig Bemelmans (April 27, 1898 – October 1, 1962) was an Austrian-American writer and illustrator of children's books and adult novels. He is known best for the ''Madeline'' picture books. Six were published, the first in 1939. Early life Bemelmans was born to the Belgian painter Lambert Bemelmans and the German Frances Fischer in Meran, Austria-Hungary (now Italy). His father owned a hotel. He grew up in Gmunden on the Traunsee in Upper Austria. His first language was French and his second German. In 1904, his father left his wife and Ludwig's governess, both of whom were pregnant with his children, for another woman, after which his mother took Ludwig and his brother to her native city of Regensburg, Germany. Bemelmans had difficulty in school, as he hated the German style of discipline. He was apprenticed to his uncle Hans Bemelmans at a hotel in Austria. Bemelmans Bar
Bemelmans Bar is a cocktail lounge and piano bar in the Carlyle Hotel, on the Upper East Side in Manhattan, New York City. The bar opened in the 1940s, serving wealthy Upper East Siders and numerous celebrities. Bemelmans has distinctive Art Deco decor, including murals of Madeline painted by Ludwig Bemelmans, author and illustrator of Madeline. It has been known for multiple drinks, though in recent years it is best known for its martinis, often served very dirty. The bar opened in 1947, and has been a place for celebrities and socialites to frequent since that time. In the early 2000s, the bar was renovated and its cocktail program was remade by bartender Audrey Saunders. In the 2020s, the bar temporarily closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Upon reopening, Bemelmans has seen a surge in popularity, especially with younger New Yorkers, eager for an authentic New York experience. Madeleine Bemelmans
Madeleine Bemelmans (''née'' Freund; June 6, 1911 in New York City – 2004) was an animal welfare activist and the wife of Ludwig Bemelmans, who wrote and illustrated the Madeline series of children's picture book series. The two were married in 1935 and Ludwig named the star of his books after his wife. (The change in spelling fostered frequent misspelling of his wife's name.) Madeleine Bemelmans was a dedicated participant in founding the Animal Welfare Institute in 1951. She served as a long-time board member of the Society for Animal Protective Legislation and as the president of that organization for a time. Bemelmans died in 2004. Ruben Bemelmans (; born 14 January 1988) is a Belgian former professional tennis player. He has a career-high ATP ranking of world No. 84 in singles, achieved on 28 September 2015, and world No. 128 in doubles, achieved on 1 October 2012. Bemelmans competed mainly in the Challenger tour circuit. Tennis career 2006–2009: Turned Pro Bemelmans won his first Futures event in Espelkamp, Germany in July 2007.
