Belvoir, also known as the Saffold Plantation, is a historic plantation house built by Reuben Saffold II near Pleasant Hill, Alabama, United States. The Greek Revival-style house features a Carolina-type, hexastyle portico with Doric columns. It was added to the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage on November 2, 1990. History Belvoir was established as a large forced-labor cotton farm in 1825 by Reuben Saffold II. Saffold was born on September 4, 1788, in Wilkes County, Georgia. He was educated there and began a law practice in Watkinsville, Georgia. He married Mary Evelyn Phillips of Morgan County in 1811. The couple had 12 children including Benjamin Franklin Saffold. Fort Belvoir is a United States Army installation and a census-designated place (CDP) in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. Belvoir was the plantation and estate of colonial Virginia's prominent William Fairfax family. Operated with the forced labor of enslaved people, it sat on the west bank of the Potomac River in Fairfax County, Virginia, at the present site of Fort Belvoir. The main house — called Belvoir Manor or Belvoir Mansion — burned in 1783 and was destroyed during the War of 1812. The site has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1973 as "Belvoir Mansion Ruins and the Fairfax Grave." Belvoir is a station stop on the light rail Green Line of the RTA Rapid Transit in Shaker Heights, Ohio. It is located in the wide landscaped median of Shaker Boulevard (Ohio State Route 87) at the intersection of Belvoir Boulevard on the north side and Belvoir Oval on the south side. History The station opened in 1936 when the Cleveland Interurban Railroad (CIRR), the predecessor of the Green Line, was extended one mile (1.6 km) east from Warrensville Center Road to Green Road. This extension was also originally a single track, and a second track was added to the extension in 1942 when increased ridership during World War II made single track operation no longer feasible. Belvoir is a historic house at Crownsville, Anne Arundel County, Maryland. It is a two-story, T-shaped building, constructed of brick, stone, and wood. The home is a product of building evolution spanning the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The earliest portion was probably built about 1736, but could date to the 17th century. It was the home of the grandmother of Francis Scott Key, who composed the Star Spangled Banner. Key visited in the summer in 1789. Archaeological research is being performed on the plantation site to document the lives of slaves during the 18th and 19th centuries.
