Bellevue Cemetery (Danville, Kentucky)
Bellevue Cemetery is a historic cemetery in Danville, Kentucky. It was established in the 1840s and was originally named Danville City Cemetery. The Danville National Cemetery is located within Bellevue Cemetery. The federal government purchased 18 lots within Bellevue Cemetery at the beginning of the American Civil War. The initial burials were Union soldiers who died at several Danville hospitals and subsequent burials included reinterments from other cemeteries. In 1876, the half-acre, rectangular plot in the northwest corner of Bellevue Cemetery was designated a national cemetery. A lot in Bellevue Cemetery adjacent to the national cemetery contains the burial of 66 Confederate soldiers. Bellevue Cemetery is managed by the City of Danville and is open to new burials. Heritage Documentation Programs
Heritage Documentation Programs (HDP) is a division of the U.S. National Park Service (NPS) responsible for administering the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS), Historic American Engineering Record (HAER), and Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS). These programs were established to document historic places in the United States. Records consist of measured drawings, archival photographs, and written reports, and are archived in the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress. Historic American Buildings Survey In 1933, NPS established the Historic American Buildings Survey following a proposal by Charles E. Peterson, a young landscape architect in the agency. Margaret Anderson Watts (, Anderson; September 3, 1832 – April 30, 1905) was an American social reformer in the temperance movement, writer, and clubwoman. She was a deep thinker on the most advanced social and religious topics of her day, and occasionally published her views on woman in her political and civil relations. She was the first Kentucky woman who wrote and advocated the equal rights of woman before the law, and who argued for the higher education of woman. William Owsley
William Owsley (March 24, 1782 – December 9, 1862) was an associate justice of the Kentucky Court of Appeals and the 16th Governor of Kentucky. He also served in both houses of the Kentucky General Assembly and was Kentucky Secretary of State under Governor James Turner Morehead. Owsley studied law under John Boyle. After briefly serving in the state legislature, he was appointed by Governor Charles Scott to serve alongside Boyle on the Kentucky Court of Appeals. During his service on the court, Owsley was involved in the Old Court – New Court controversy. In 1824, the state legislature, unhappy with the court's rulings against debt relief legislation, attempted to abolish the court and replace it with a new court. For a time, both courts operated simultaneously, and both claimed to be the court of last resort in the state. John Kincaid (politician)
John Kincaid (February 15, 1791 – February 7, 1873) was a United States representative from Kentucky. He was born near Danville, Kentucky, where he attended the public schools. He studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Stanford, Kentucky. Kincaid served as a Kentucky Commonwealth attorney. He was also a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives in 1819. He was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-first Congress (March 4, 1829 – March 3, 1831). After leaving Congress, he was again a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives in 1836 and 1837. He served as circuit judge in 1836 and 1837 and then resumed the practice of law and also engaged in agricultural pursuits, He moved to Gallatin, Tennessee, in 1870 and died there on February 7, 1873.
