Belleville Philharmonic Society
The Belleville Philharmonic Society is an orchestra founded in 1866 in Belleville, Illinois by a group of interested citizens. It is the second oldest continuously operating orchestra in the United States. It consists of three ensembles - an orchestra, a chorale, and a youth orchestra. The current conductor for the orchestra and chorale is Robert Hart Baker. Leon Burke III is the conductor for the youth orchestra. Goal The Philharmonic Society of Belleville is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting arts in the greater Belleville community. The Philharmonic has been an integral part of providing musical experience for musicians and music lovers of all ages since its founding. Belleville, Illinois
Belleville is a city and the county seat of St. Clair County, Illinois, coterminous with the now defunct Belleville Township. It is also the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Belleville and the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows. The population was 44,478 according to the Census Bureau's 2010 data, making it the largest city in the state south of Springfield. Robert Hart Baker
Robert Hart Baker (born March 19, 1954) is a symphonic and operatic onductorand music director based in Belleville, IL. Previously York, PA and Asheville, NC, United States. He has toured extensively, in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Mexico, and Asia. Among the many concerts he has led have been the full works of the Beethoven, Brahms, Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky symphonies and the Strauss tone poems, in addition to most of the orchestral works of Mahler, Dvorak, Schubert, Debussy, Ravel, Poulenc, and Ernest Bloch. The ''Belleville News-Democrat'' is a daily newspaper in Belleville, Illinois. Focusing on news that is local to the area of southwestern Illinois, it has been published under various names for 150 years. As of 2009, it is published by The McClatchy Company, and is based in St. Clair County, Illinois. It publishes content in print as well as online at bnd.com. Leon Burke III
Leon Burke III is an American musician, singer, and conductor from St. Louis, Missouri. He began his musical studies at age 12 and by age 16 was conducting orchestras. Personal life Leon Burke III is a native St. Louisan, where he attended Mc Bride High School and John Burroughs School. He holds music degrees from the Oberlin Conservatory and the University of Kansas. Burke studied as a Fulbright Fellow in Paraguay. Burke writes: "I was born in St. Louis into a family of teachers. Concerto Competition
In classical music, a concerto competition is a competition whereby contestants perform concertos or movements of concertos in a qualifying round, in order to be selected to play their concerto with an orchestra. Typically, the final round is a public concert featuring the finalists performing with orchestra. After the final round, a winner is decided, who may receive an opportunity to perform the complete concerto with the orchestra in their next season.
