Bellemare (; ) is a Norman surname, that means "somebody from Bellemare", name of several hamlets in Normandy (± 20). It is also one of the most common family names in Mauricie, Quebec. It is a compound of French ''belle'' "nice, pretty" and ''mare'' "mere, lake, pond", Norman word of Old Norse origin ''marr'' "sea", finally borrowed from Norman by French around 1600 as "pond, puddle". History of the Canadian Bellemares The Bellemares share a common ancestor with the Gélinas: Étienne Gellineau, a , or maker of serge fabric, from La Salenderie, close to Saintes in France's Saintonge area (now known as Charente-Maritime). Gellineau married France Huguette Robert in Saint-Michel's catholic Church 27 June 1645. He settled the Mauricie area in 1658 and worked for three years as an indentured servant for Pierre Boucher, Governor of Trois-Rivières. Gellineau had three sons: Étienne, Jean-Baptiste and Pierre. The Normans (Norman language, Norman: ''Normaunds''; french: Normands; la, Nortmanni/Normanni) were a population arising in the medieval Duchy of Normandy from the intermingling between Norsemen, Norse Viking settlers and indigenous West Francia, West Franks and Gallo-Roman culture, Gallo-Romans. Diane Bellemare
Diane Bellemare (born October 13, 1949) is a Canadian economist and parliamentarian from Quebec, who was appointed to the Senate of Canada on September 6, 2012. From September 2003 to April 2007, she held executive jobs with the ''Conseil du patronat du Québec'', including Senior Vice-President and Chief Economist from April 2006 to April 2007. Bellemare was appointed to the Senate by Governor General David Johnston on the advice of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and sat as a member of the Conservative Party of Canada caucus until March 2016 when she resigned to sit as an Independent. In May 2016, she was appointed Deputy Government Representative to the Senate by Government Representative Peter Harder. Rose-Eliandre Bellemare (born 20 August 1989) is a French artistic gymnast and a member of the French National Team. She participated in the 2008 Summer Olympics. Bellemare joined the French Junior Team at age 12. She competed at the junior European championships in 2004, and the senior competition in 2006. After a hiatus of one year due to injury, she made a comeback and qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games as a replacement. She replaced Cassy Vericel on the team. Bellemare participated in the Olympic competition on three apparatuses and helped the French team to finish in 7th place overall for this event. Pierre-Édouard Bellemare (born 6 March 1985) is a French professional ice hockey player for the Seattle Kraken of the National Hockey League (NHL). He has also played for the Philadelphia Flyers, Vegas Golden Knights, Colorado Avalanche and Tampa Bay Lightning. Michel Bellemare (born July 10, 1967) is a Canadian politician and lawyer. Bellemare was a member of the City Council in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada from 1994 to 2010. He served as the acting as mayor of Ottawa, while mayor Larry O'Brien faced charges from May 2 to July 8, 2009 and represented Beacon Hill-Cyrville Ward in the east end of the city, formerly part of Gloucester. Born in Ottawa, Bellemare is the son of former Liberal Member of Parliament Eugene Bellemare, and nephew of MP Jean-Robert Gauthier. Maurice Bellemare, (8 June 1912 – 15 June 1989) was a politician in Quebec, Canada. He was known as ''Le Vieux Lion de la Politique Québécoise'' (The Old Lion of Quebec Politics) because of his colourful style and his many years of public office.
