Belknap Nunatak
Thurston Island is an ice-covered, glacially dissected island, long, wide and in area, lying a short way off the northwest end of Ellsworth Land, Antarctica. It is the third-largest island of Antarctica, after Alexander Island and Berkner Island. The island was discovered from the air by Rear Admiral Byrd on February 27, 1940, who named it for W. Harris Thurston, a New York textile manufacturer, designer of the windproof "Byrd Cloth" and sponsor of Antarctic expeditions. Thurston Island is separated from the mainland by Peacock Sound, which is occupied by the western portion of Abbot Ice Shelf. It divides Bellingshausen Sea to the east from Amundsen Sea to the west. Camp Belknap
YMCA Camp Belknap is an all-boys summer resident camp in Tuftonboro, New Hampshire, on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee. Founded in 1903, on Winnipesaukee's Timber Island, in the shadow of Belknap Mountain, its likely namesake. Relocated to Tuftonboro in 1907, this boys' camp was owned and operated by the New Hampshire YMCA until the demise of the state Y in 1996. It is now an independent non-profit affiliated with the national Y. Belknap celebrated its 100th year in operation in 2003, making it one of the oldest continuously operating camps in the United States. Facility and program Camp Belknap boasts more than of playfields, courts and forested land, much of it held as a conservation easement; plus one mile of lakefront property. Camp Belknap was a military camp during the Mexican–American War. History When war was declared on Mexico in May 1846, Congress authorized the raising of 50,00 volunteer troop to supplement the regular army. General Zachary Taylor was inundated with the volunteer soldiers arriving at Brazos Santiago, and was forced to place them in temporary encampments. In the summer of 1846, Camp Belknap was built on a long narrow rise of land. At its peak, it held 7,000–8,000 troops from eight different states. Despite one false alarm, no enemy attack took place. By September, most of the volunteers had either moved further upriver. By December 1846, the camp was completely empty. The ''Belknap''-class cruiser was a class of single-ended guided-missile cruisers (their missile armament was installed only forward, unlike "double-ended" missile cruisers with missile armament installed both forward and aft) built for the United States Navy during the 1960s. They were originally designated as DLG frigates (destroyer leaders; the USN use of the term frigate from 1950 to 1975 was intended to evoke the power of the sailing frigates of old), but in the 1975 fleet realignment, they were reclassified as guided missile cruisers (CG). Belknap Bridge
The Belknap Bridge (also McKenzie River Bridge) crosses the McKenzie River near the unincorporated community of Rainbow in Lane County, Oregon, United States. It is approximately three miles west of the town of McKenzie Bridge which is named after the bridge. It is the fourth covered bridge built on the site. The bridge is well maintained and open to traffic. The Belknap Bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. History Lane County was the first in Oregon to build covered bridges on a large scale. Today, the county has more surviving covered bridges than any other county west of the Mississippi River, a total of 17 bridges, including 14 that are still open to traffic. Belknap Stone House
The Belknap Stone House in Newburgh, New York, was built by Abel Belknap in the 1750s. Abel Belknap chaired the local Committee of Safety during the war, and when the Continental Army was encamped in the Newburgh area in 1782–83, the house served as James Clinton's headquarters in the area. Today it has been restored and operates as Stone Cottage Veterinary Clinic. The Belknap House, at 1206 North Nevada Street in Carson City, Nevada, is a historic house built in 1875. Also known as the Barber-Belknap House or the Beck-Barber-Belknap House, it includes Second Empire architecture. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. It is a two-story building with shiplap siding. It is significant as the home, during 1881 to 1908, of Charles Henry Belknap, who was Chief Justice of the Nevada Supreme Court. Belknap School
Belknap School (also known as the District No. 8 School House) is a historic former school house at 509 Greenville Avenue in the Belknap village of Johnston, Rhode Island. The first school on the site was built in 1790 and was the first school in the town when it was founded. The current school building was built on the same site in 1892 and was used as a school until 1938. It was used as an American Legion building from the late 1940s until 1998. In 2002 the building was acquired by the Johnston Historical Society.
