Belize District
Belize District is a district of the nation of Belize. Its capital is Belize City. Geography Most of the Belize District is in the east central mainland of Belize; the Belize District also includes various offshore islands, including Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, St. George's Caye, Caye Chapel, English Caye, Goff's Caye, and Turneffe Atoll. Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker are considered two of the country's primary tourism areas. The longest river in the country, the Belize River, passes through the district and joins the Caribbean Sea along its coast. The Northern River, Sibun River, and Manatee River are also in this District. Settlements San Pedro Town, which is situated on the island of Ambergris Caye, is also in the Belize District. Caye Caulker and St. George's Caye are the island villages in this district. Burrel Boom
Burrell Boom is on the Belize River twenty miles above Belize City, Belize. Tourists pass through this historic village on their way to the Community Baboon Sanctuary, where the population of black howler monkeys has grown to over 2,000. History During the 18th century, loggers settled along the Belize River, floating logwood and later mahogany logs down to Belize Town. Burrell Boom grew as a gathering and milling point for these logs, with its boom stretched across the river. In 1837 the Methodist ministers Thomas Jefferies and John Greenwood built a chapel in Burrell Boom, and Catholic missionary activities ensued along the whole Belize River from the mid-nineteenth century. The village has now both Methodist and Catholic elementary schools. Each Good Friday Anglican, Methodist, and Catholic communities in town gather for an ecumenical service which rotates among the churches. Ladyville is the largest village in the country of Belize, eight miles northwest of Belize City in the Belize District. The Philip Goldson Highway connects Ladyville to Belize City. Grace Bank, formerly Barcadares, is an unincorporated hamlet 33 miles up the Belize River. It was the second settlement founded by the first English settlers of present-day Belize. Gardenia is a village in Belize District, Belize located about north of Belize City. Geography Gardenia is located at (17.673, -88.418), between Sandhill and Biscayne villages. Gardenia stretches from mile 20 to 23 on the Northern Highway and includes the Grace Bank Community for administrative purposes.
